Fellow treasure hunters I may be posting this in the wrong forum but I need help identifying a weird looking log that i discovered in the woods looking for possible old home sites to detect, its a log which i hope got its origin from mars and the seeds hitched a ride from a meteor LOL, but i suspect it may be old cedar, i,m going to try and make a lamp out of it, it was found in michigan on the east coast of the state, thanks. Hard to tell by the pic. Does it appear carved or natural?

No, but a very shallow swamp was nearby about 300 ft, or so

That is a beautiful piece of wood I am jealous.Just clear coat it or use linseed oil or tung oil it will bring out it's natural colors.

That's cool. I part linseed oil and 2 or 3 parts mineral spirits make look natural and preserve it.

I would guess that it is the heart, or core of a tree/log. the outer part has rotted away.

What type of trees or bushes are growing in the area?

Anything in the area that is still alive and growing? My guess it's part of a climbing vine, but that's just a guess, not even a scientific guess. Never seen anything like it.

That appears to be a Diamond Willow. Its sought after by folks wanting unique walking sticks and staffs.

Appears to be a young Shar-Pei tree, the wrinkles mostly go away when they grow up.

I thought about a vine but I've never seen any that straight.
