I LOVE this website! I found it a few weeks ago and have spent hours reading posts. Informative and so interesting. I decided to come out of lurking to ask about some recent finds.
The hubby and I took our kids out in the woods on our community's common area. He has a cheap metal detector and I'm sure we're not using it right. Regardless, it's fun. Last weekend our 10 year old son found some pieces of pottery, which we took to our county's Lost Towns Project. They told us it was from the 2nd quarter of the 19th century.
Yesterday we found a bunch of pottery shards, cool rocks, and mystery metal hunks. The two items below are a mystery.
This first one is about 2.5" wide. We have no clue on this. It sort of reminds me of part of a clipboard.
The front:

From the top, showing the strange pitchfork-looking thing:

This shows the piece that isn't permanently attached:

The second mystery find is a very heavy (iron?) piece of metal. It's 2.75" long, rough looking, looks like it was painted white but some of the paint looks worn off showing the metal. It has a hole at the top. I was wondering if it was one of those weights that used to be inside windows to hold them open?

If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.
Thanks!
Kim
