Metal Detecting
Hello everyone. New here. Today I went metal detecting. Probably my 4th time going. I’m pretty sure I hit it big. We have been digging on an old 1800s house site. We’ve found wagon axles. Old water pumps. And today I came across this approximately 8 inches in a hole. I couldn’t contain the excitement. My first treasure. I’m pretty sure it’s gold. But does anyone know what it is? Thanks

Great save! I'd have to say the "red flag" is your jeweler, like Scuba sez. Wouldn't trust a jeweler who had to wait for his "gold guy", and also second-guess how you acquired it. You are on a GREAT site, keep after it hard. Thx for sharing, Ddf.

Nice save. I wouldn’t let that thing out of my sight either.

Find a place that has an XRF machine. I t looks like a microwave oven. That would tell you the exact metal composition.

Gold filled vest pocket fob.

Go back and find the fob part.

PS.. find anew "jeweler"... if he cannot I.D. sterling... WHICH IS base for Gold filled items such as your item... NOR know what "black meant"... heh

Oh... here is a couple "similar"...

Return

Today we started off the year with some good luck. We returned to the 1800s house location. The first hole I decided to dig.. which was no more then 5 feet away from where I found the gold, I land a 1870 Indian head. We also found what appears to be a heel plate from a shoe. Can’t wait until I can get back out there and keep digging.

Your bottom 3 pictures on page 1, are of a leather rivet. I like the flat button also. Nice finds.

Very nice! no idea what it is , I found something similar last year only mine was gold plated.... yours is incredible!

and yes find a better jeweler, this guy seems like a con artist. they can easily tell gold from garbage!

Wow looks like you have a great site to hunt! Congrats! :icon_thumleft: I too think it's a watch fob. AARC has shown 2 fob's that look a lot like yours!

I had a jeweler try to scam me out of my 10k high school ring. He pretended to scrape the ring across the stone and held the stone up and said: "Look it's not gold because it doesn't leave a mark on the stone!" Then tried to give me $50 for the ring! Just go to Amazon and buy a gold test kit. Very cheap and very easy to test metals.

Sounds like you have a great hunting spot, I also agree with AARC, congrats on your saves to date & BOL on your future hunts

Welcome to the addiction it only gets worse Great find any markings

Sadly no, I’ve been over it everywhere... and there are no markings. I really wish it was dated. I would love to know it’s story. I have concluded that where I found the gold was located in the front yard area of the house. The same area I found the Indian Head. I’m about to head out and see What else I can find
