Well, at least for me. My father found this a couple of years ago and suggested I put it in front of this crowd for an I.D. It is not magnetic but sets off my metal detector. The color is more of a silver color than the pics show, and it is riddled with holes as though it has been super-heated. Thanks up front~CO2

looks too silvery to be coal. and yes coal does give a signal( a low one). been to many foundations an dug up lots of coal. almost like a nickel signal , maybe a little lower.

I wear hematite jewelry (State mineral of Missouri), and yes, it will ping on a detector, just like iron. I think this looks a lot like hematite, from the picture, anyway.

In photo number Dcp02694 your specimen seems to have some sort of round nodules embedded into the rock. Would be interesting to view it under a microscope with different light sources. I also noticed it has an obsidian look too, but then you would not get a hit on your M/D. Unless those nodules are some sort of non-ferrous metal that would sound off a M/D. Good luck in your quest.
