Mystery piece - old furnace part?

I am wondering if anyone knows what this is. Got it recently from a buddy cleaning out an old building. He was thinking part of an old furnace. The two arms fold in.

Looks designed to wobble on two legs.
Maybe look into "shaker grate "s designs for coal stoves..
