Mystery Wreck Wednesday! Here is some footage of what we believe may be the stern chunk of a paddlewheel steamer in deep water of the Gulf of Mexico. There's not much structure at all, and it's kind of amazing this got dived...it looks like maybe a little exposed limestone fuzz on the sounder. But as you will see, this little spot yielded a lot of interesting artifacts and important information. There is no telling how many more of these little chunks may be out there off the main section of the wreck several miles away....

I'd say by looking at the bottles it is mid to late 19th century. Those big boys were used for carrying acids and all kinds of stuff.

We found an 1870 patent date on a Felthousen reflector panel as well as a 1914 patent date on a lantern globe. You'd think the loss of a wooden-hulled paddle steamer lost with a general cargo would stand out in the records or news in the 1920s or 1930s (as most of them were being dismantled or scrapped), but this one has eluded identification...

No, farther north and much deeper. The Naples paddlewheeler is another conundrum...
