I believe that Native American portable rock art is a myth. Granted, there are carvings, there are statues and there are idols, but if you don't see something definitive right away, such as a man, a buffalo, or an eagle, or even an animal you can't identify, then it's just a rock. True rock art, is the stuff you see that is carved, painted or sculpted and even a blind man can see what it is. The Native Americans didn't waste their time on crappy rocks. When they made something, they did it with quality and perfection in mind. You can pick up a rock, and turn it a thousand ways, and you can see a thousand animals. It's all in the eye of the person holding the rock. That's why I get mad when I see ebay listings showing just a normal rock, and the seller insist's that it is a rare NA effigy. NOT! Just a rock, so sell it as a rock, and not something rare trying to defraud somebody.

Sorry about my rant. :-) Needed to vent. I believe it is melted metal from a camp fire.

native american portable rock art is an EBAY creation....there are always lots of silly rocks for sale on EBAY at silly inflated prices by multiple silly sellers. None of them are selling anything worth a dime and lots of them claim some sort of provenance or expert papers. You see this from time to time... someone starts a "fad" and others jump on the bandwagon and before you know it things like "portable rock art" become real with multiple internet pages to back up the concept...then before you know "Joe Blow" becomes the go to expert on the subject....we have had our fair share here.

Here are some bogus rock art pieces on ebay right now.

RABS.jpg

This is "supposed" to be a "Village woman" according to the seller.

This is "supposed" to be an effigy.

This is "supposed" to be a "bear claw nutting stone effigy tool hand carved by a shaman". Yeah right.

I thought I was being very polite when I suggested that you post pictures of your items in the Native American forum . I was suggesting that to you since you would not believe the guys trying to help here, that maybe you would believe the guys on that forum , politely telling you that what you had was rocks.
