I'd say to start learning your particular metal detector is to start in your own yard or relations yard. You never know what you might find! Then maybe go to a close by school/park, but b4 you do that you might want to look into your states metal detecting laws in your area. Hope this helps you a bit to get started in a great hobby. Only other thing I might mention is look up metal detecting etiquette.
