I usually run my Vaquero just above iron. Sometimes I will super tune it. Either way, when I hit a target I will try to use the disc to identify it. When doing this it seems that many, many times I can max the disc and still dig a dadgum pull tab! Is this normal? I bought it used and I'm wondering if my machine might need a tune up from the factory. Sometimes the signal will get "choppy" and I think yeah that's probably a pull tab. But there have been way, way too many times that it was hitting hard at full disc and I dug DEEP only to find a pull tab:(

Second question: The manual says the strongest signal will be at the center of the coil but I find the edge of the coil to be pretty hot. I'm having a helluva time pinpointing with this rig. (I'm using the stock coil and typically hunting some trashy sites). With my Compadre I could pop out a coin with a screwdriver on first plunge. Any tips on the Vaq?

Your input would be much appreciated:)

Try an air test with a pulltab and I bet you can disc. it out just fine. My guess is the tab was being discriminated out and your real target is below or alongside the tab. Did you recheck your hole after removing the tab? If you can't disc out the tab with an air test you probably have detector problems. Also try sizing up your target to see if it coin sized. You might be hitting on large metal or aluminum cans and it just happens the tab was in the hole also. I have dug many holes and the pinpointer finds all the junk that was discriminated out before it finds the coin below.

You may need to send it in. The tech at Tesoro can re-phase your machine and tune the coil to the machine. Give them a call.

Had a similar problem with a Cortez I owned. Sense too high and it would deform the pinpoint location.
Got rid of it. My Vaquero has never done that. Also should disc out pull tabs easy.

You may need a tune up on your coil. Also, I believe on deep targets you can out distance your disc. My Vaquero is hot on the edge of the coil, but I raise the coil sometimes and find the center when pinpointing. I have used the edge of the 9x8 to pinpoint shallow targets. I hunt mainly with the 5.75 concentric coil for coins and jewelry and it is easier with pinpointing. I use the disc at the first mark past Iron a lot and sensitivity at 10. I do turn the sensitivity down to 1 at times when detecting around metal structures. I love the 9x8 coil for open low target areas such as sports field. The 5.75 rocks on everything else. My Vaquero is a powerful machine and is effective on the deeper than expected targets on the soccer fields I often hunt. Good luck and happy hunting.

maybe a tune at the factory will be needed, also make sure you are not running it too hot. The way I pinpoint with concentrics is lifting the coil on disc mode and also on pinpoint mode

I found supertuning to be very unstable and blows out the disc. Try ground balancing with slight hum and leaving the thres alone and see if that doesn't help.

I don't like supertune either. I run some tests and came to the conclusion that if you use headphones and have good hearing, supertuning doesn't add depth at all
