Need help identifying my inherited rock collection

When my father passed he left me his entire rock collection who he inherited from and Israel camp counselor they treated him as a son I know a lot of it is quartz but there are many stones that I have no idea what they are I believe some of them could be meteorites and artifacts feel free to contact me on here with any answers or email me at laurendollyeah@gmail.com

It’s a brave person that identifies rocks from a single picture, but there are some additional clues here. My thoughts would be:

1 Possibly quartz but, zooming in, there are some very right-angled cleavage planes that suggest it’s more probably calcite.



4 and 5 are probably ‘quartzy’ rocks but presumably collected because of the ‘gold’ deposits on them. It might be gold, or it might be pyrite. The focus isn’t good enough to show whether these are crystalline deposits, which would be indicative for pyrite

6 Appears to be a fossil from limestone. Best guess is that it might be an eroded sea urchin… perhaps in the territory of a Hemicidaris species. Sponge is also a possibility.

8 Looks like coal shale with a weak residual impression of a fossilised leaflet of the Pecopteris type… the generic name we give to unidentified fronds from extinct tree ferns and seed ferns.

9 Looks to be a sandstone fossil cast of brachiopod (a marine organism with the shell hinged for top/bottom rather than left/right as in bivalves)

11 That does look like quartz

13 as for number 1… quartz or calcite, but I’m leaning towards calcite.

I’m not seeing any artefacts or any meteorites. For the latter (I guess you’re thinking pictures 2 and three) more details of properties would be needed… but they don’t look very promising candidates.

Thank you for your time. I just now saw. your post I was just posting a few pictures of a few things that were intriguing but I have more than I would even have time to post. Boxes and boxes and boxes things labeled 1 and 2 century and King Solomon's Mines huge stones I definitely need. Help labeling these things and figuring out what they are because I am in desperate need of selling some of them To pay off debt that feels like is swallowing me whole. I can ppst more pics any help is better then none

Looks like a Piece of Fern Fossil



Used to be Very Easy to Find here in Schuylkill county when I was young,
And the Coal Fields were Open to everyone

Good luck in managing your debt but, just to manage your expectations, you should be aware that what you're showing are low-value rockhound collectibles. Nothing that you would expect to pay more than one or two dollars for in a rock&gem shop.

Maybe concentrating on the more impressive-looking specimens from the collection might yield something of higher value but sadly I wouldn't be too hopeful based on what you have shown so far.

possible Shell Fossil appears to be from the Ancient Sea Beds ,
Like found in Lebanon County

I'm always Curious when I Find a Rock like this


because of the Iron content I Think Hopefully Meteorite.
But never seen a Pic of a Meteorite that looks like it so

I believe #2 and #3 are Mica Schist with Garnet inclusions, and #10 is the bottom of a Smoky Quartz crystal.

For civil_war22, I'm 100% certain there are no Thunder Egg specimens in the photos. I like 'em a lot, enough to have hunted for them on numerous Rockhounding occasions, so I tend to recognize an "uncut" one when I see it.

I’ve never dug one, I saw the last photo, and was just throwing it out there. I almost wonder if he/she cut it open if it would have any mineralized wonders in it. I’ll take a pic of a huge geode I found. It’s in the shape of a human skull. I took a band saw to it in high school and partially cut it open, but am beginning to think I should find me a rock saw, and try to slab it in several little pieces.
