Need help identifying

I found these what look to be rivets. One of them still has the leather attaching them. The other I found pretty much crumbled in my had after I dug them out. They appear to be something to a strap or pouch. Maybe something on a bridle. I know they are not very clean as I have not had much time to do it. Has anyone seen this type of item before?

I just found this on Google. It is a rivet to an ammo pouch. It looks similar. Any thoughts?

According to the your picture they do look like rivets still on some leather strapping. Maybe not from an ammo pouch though, they could have been from anything really. I find them all the time in fields where there used to be an old home site.

Thanks for the reply Trezurehunter. I just found another pic of a bayonet scabbard that looks very similar to the rivets I have. Thoughts? I am going to try to lightly brush them tonight to get some of the dirt off. Maybe I can get a better picture.

They were used on all leather objects horse tach more then likely. Congrats

If found in situ with CW artifacts or in a camp, the assumption can be made that they are CW (military) items. This type of rivet was used for a long time, and for a wide range of purposes.

If you find items like that in the same area, it gives you information about perhaps a camp or old home site being there.

This was definitely an encampment site and a battle site very close by. We found fired bullets as well. There was a ton of movements in the area Those pics are in another thread. Interestingly, there was visible trench areas still. Some quite long. Obviously not very deep, but visible. It was a great hunt and I really enjoyed doing the research on the area.

Here are two of the rivets cleaned up a little. I am not sure what to do with the leather though. While it seems fairly strong, I am scared to brush them too much. Any thoughts on cleaning and preserving the leather? Maybe saddle soap or something along those lines?
