Sorry if this is the wrong spot to post this, but it was either here or Civil war, and it's between the two.
Last month I detected an old camp site in California. The site in general has history from the first part of the 1800's to the late 1800's, and we had dug some tongue and wreath eagle buckles there, an 1840's Naval two piece button, powder flasks, and other period relics, great site to detect as every conductor is period. Last time we were there targets were getting sparse, but I managed to dig this one piece button. It was pretty crudded up, but I could tell there was what appeared to be an eagle underneath with olive branches and arrows. Yesterday I cleaned it with some Naval Jelly, and it cleaned up nicely.
The button database on The Depot suggests that it's either an 1820 Militia button or an 1820 Infantry button. I don't have any of the button books, as we simply don't find enough interesting old buttons on the west coast to justify the expenditure. Can anyone with one of the U.S. military button ID books tell me what exactly I have here?
