I know you were in a historical area and my idea might not be as interesting but it really looks like a drapery rosette to me.
Can you give some size reference? Maybe it's a bridle rosette.
 

I just measured it. 2 1/4" x 2". Thanks:)
 

Does it look like there are places where a shank was attached to the back?
 

As far as I can see no. But that doesn't mean there wasn't one.
 

I would agree appears to be "Copper Bridle Rosette" 1800's
