Hey Chris,
I saw what you guys found last week! :o Very nice!
Herbie's in the process of re-plating this old ring for me that "Sentinel" found,
I purchased it from him earlier this year.

Have fun with Herbie in NH in October!
Dave

It might be easier to date the year the cottage was built then estimate that within a year or two prior would be the date of the door knocker; just saying........

I thought about that too Don, all I have is a Google Earth picture taken of it about 5 years before it was torn down. If I were to hazard a guess based on the date of other structures in the vicinity, I'd say 1930's or 40's.

Thanks,
Dave

buy it a glass of white wine , tell it has a wonderful wit and it looks lovely .

seriously nice find -- look at old land deeds for the spot see when it was inhabited -- the houses listed on the tax deeds should give you a ball park age range .

Ivan, are we talking about a woman or a piece of old house hardware here buddy?! :laughing7:
Thanks for your "age" suggestions too!

This inuendo has got to stop. Everyone who knows Warsaw Daddy knows he is the expert on "knockers" He even has an inspectors license. I've seen it. Monty

Hello Dave,
Your doorknocker is the 'style' from the Federal period, which extends from 1780 through 1820 and includes Hepplewhite, Sheraton and Classical styles. Without seeing it in person, I don't know if it is a true antique from that period or if it is a copy, but you should be able to tell. It has all of the basic characteristics from that period. Below is a pic of a Hepplewhite drawer pull; note the similarities. Super nice find  Breezie

Cool piece of hardware....
I get lots of door & furniture hardware, but yet to find any nice knockers :'(
I love the Hepplewhite Escutions  I have an 'acorn' pattern in addition to this 'thistle', amazing how well these thin brass stampings come out of the ground.
I now have recovered 4 of the 'Classical' drawer pulls.
Pic of finished ring too! I can put the gold on, but can't remedy the pitting,
It looks like a dug 19th C karat gold ring now, the copper leaches out of the alloy in the ground and pits karat gold too
I think Breezies correct with 'Federal' era, the urn motif was popular.
