I believe it is the "lead" filler from a "lead"-filled stamped-brass US M1851 or M1874 swordbelt plate.

For anybody here who doesn't already know:
I put quotation-marks around "lead" in the statement above because the filler metal in the back of US buckles, breastplates, boxplates etc isn't actually lead... it is a solder-like alloy consisting of lead, tin, & zinc. That is why we don't see nice Minie-ball-white lead patina on the back of the so-called "lead-filled" buckles and plates.
