Hey SBB--the only known picture of Billy The Kid (a tin type) sold in Denver yesterday for 2 mill plus. Makes you kind want to keep working on it , doesn't it?

Let me know when the check is in the mail for Bat. I was a big fan of the 50's show, and can almost sing the theme song. I'll bet with Big Cy's help, we could get that done.

Asking me if I want to keep this thing going is like the Wizard of Oz asking the Cowardly Lion if he wants courage, which is when the Lion replied ...

"Oh, I do - I do - I do!"

One thing I have been trying to figure out, and really shouldn't be all that difficult to do when you stop and think about it, is to come up with the word that fits in the gap at the top of the photo between ...

sent (gap/missing word) with -

After all, the missing word can only be one of very few that would fit. Don't ya think?

If we can figure the text out, we'll be "Whistiling Dixie"

Here's a link to an article about the tintype photo of "Billy the Kid" that sold in Denver, Colorado yesterday for $2.3 million. And to think the auction estimate was only $400,000.00!
"Watch out Denver ... here I come!"

That is "Smoothears" Larsen, an old time bad guy. Well, who else could it be? Doesn't look like any of the IDs given so far to me. Monty

I received a reply this morning from one of several e-mail inquiries that I have been sending out. Here is the copy/pasted message from an individual named Tom who is involved with Old West photos ...

Sorry, don't recognize him. There are thousands of those old portraits floating around out there and most weren't anybody famous. That's kinda sad because those pictures meant something to a family at one time. Thanks for sending it.

Tom

I found something similar but never could ID the man on the button. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,235199.0.html

Could be. Based on the word size on either side, the missing center one was probably no more than four or five letters. Or, it could be two small words like ...

sent to you with -

If we could figure out what that word is before "sent" it would probably be easier. I'm thinking the last letter of that word is a "z" but it could be a "y" a "j" or a "g"

I am also wondering if the Mal no6 and the other # 6 are in some way related? Must be! And if so, the ive # 6 might tie in with the Mal no6 as in ... Mal _ _ _ ive # 6 Providing it even is ive ... it might be ine .. which would change it to Mal _ _ _ ine # 6 This is getting crazy ... but is probably simpler than we think.

Thanks.

SBB

The name may be Laine. Its the 7th most common Finnish surname. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laine

Im beginning to realize its in English. :PThe name looks like ess Laine.

He must be important if 6 paintings were made. #6 same as the one sent.

[Bigcypresshunter]

What name ends in ess?

Mal may also be a name.

[NGE]

Ness, Highness........NGE

[Bigcypresshunter]

Its a long shot but heres a list of Finnish boys names. I dont know if any end in ess. http://www.babynology.com/finnish-boynames-a0.html

I couldnt find any.

Someone liked the frame so much they took it off.

[ray in ny]

I just started reading this and went from beginning to end--am totally fascinated. I keep looking at the photo, and there is something about it that makes me think that he is British. It's the mustache, the way he holds his head, something like maybe he was in British Army and then came West?

[Bigcypresshunter]

I think the best clue we have is Laine (but maybe its Lain?)

The next best clue is Mal No 6 or #6.

Laine is a Finnish name but the person may have adopted an American first name. http://www.finamhsw.com/index.html

I just cant figure the ess.

Ness, Highness........NGE

At least 6 paintings were made. Mal is either a Latin word or another name. or maybe the artists signature.

The painting was "sent back with" or "sent along with" but I dont think it matters.

Ksoenot is also a clue but it seems to have reached a dead end.

[Bigcypresshunter]

To broaden the search, Laine could be Finnish or Estonian. In English its a variant of the surname Lane. http://www.babynology.com/otherorigins-laine-m1.html http://www.babynology.com/otherorigins-laine-m1.html

I think someone involved in this portrait is named Lain or Laine.

I have been playing with the "stamped word"..It is an unusual "K" followed by a "6" then a strange "A"..I turned the pic upside down. It has"63878X1l ' "..also "35XA75", "D,B,D7" and a hidden "T"..The pic was taken through a magnifying glass...

[NGE]

Oh my, just woke up and thought my eyes were getting worse, whew, sure glad it was the magnifying glass effect... .......NGE
