🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Need some help identifying this item

Hi All,

I dug up this item earlier today in a forest preserve that has had activity from the 1820s and onward. It rang up as a 26 on my Equinox 900 so I am guessing it is made of nickel? It has a distinctive shape and I was thinking it is perhaps a led seal but (like I said before) it doesn't ring up as lead. I am currently soaking it in warm soapy water to see if there is any engraving on it. Anyone have any ideas?

It is a thumb pad from some catch-type mechanism. I remember as a kid, my father smoked a pipe and ordered a custom blended tobacco that came in a round 1 pound can that was opened by pressing down on tab like that.

Another possibility is the thumb pad from an old push-up candle holder, similar to these:

What about some type of decoration they would hand around there nect., Maybe they did not want to drill a hole in it ?
