This object is about a half dollar size and cleans up like a penny. The back looks like it was attached to something and has some tarnish on it. It has some lettering on the flags about the wings of the eagle but I cant make it out. Please enlighten me. Thanks in advance.

US Army General Service Great Seal button (or maybe in your case a collar/hat insignia based on the reverse side). Been around 1902 onward.
