Hi gang hope all is well with you. So I went thrifting as I was bored because on Thursday I tore my tendon and muscle in my calf and cant really walk. I pray no surgery, lol. So Saw this item in the case hidden under some junk. I was like wow this is a awesome find, but no price. So the cashier said, just came in from some boxes and we just put it out in the case so how about 1.99. I was like ya i'll take it. It is very fragile and the beadwork is amazing. It is a old piece. I cannot figure out what it is or what tribe it is affiliated with. The size of this piece is 7x7 inches. All hand put together. It is heavy as well. Any help/thoughts is appreciated.

Howdy chad,

What size is it, and what does the flipside look like? The motif is the Thunderbird. It appears modern to me...

Hi it is actually around 8x8 inches. The back has the same pattern a the front. Only difference is the thunderbird's are facing the opposite way.

I noticed at the pow wows I go to, there are not a lot of thunderbirds around in the beading work I see. . It may be more modern. Beading kits were quite popular in the 50s and 60s. No matter , it took a LOT of time to do that and it looks cool. I am not expert but the colors of the turquoise blue do not seem old to me. Again no expert. I am pretty sure the pic is older beaderwork,

if an older one,the beads should be glass i would think, pretty sure trade beads were glass, native would be bone and shell.

Research the tribes of Oklahoma. The Oklahoma National Guard patch has the Thunderbird on it. We have a Lake Thunderbird, and a casino called Thunderbird Casino. However I do not know of any local tribe that is directly associated with the Thunderbird itself.
