Really, boys. We call ourselves "treasure hunters" when all we really are are middleage fat bas tards out scratching for change. Don't take yourselves so seriously. It's not like you're going to find the sister ship to the Atocha out in some farmers back 40. LOL

OT

Exactly right. It's a hobby nothing more.

Re: Never Tell Your Plans to a Hunter You Don't Know

Years ago I took a fellow Deer hunting as a favor to my wife...the guy was the husband of a good friend of hers...he wanted to hunt, but had no place to go... Two weeks later I arrived at my hunting spot to find this guy and four of HIS friends hunting all over the place..even using my stands! Some people just have no class!

Re: Never Tell Your Plans to a Hunter You Don't Know

i guess thats why that guy was the " expert"...beat ya to the punch. but really how was that guy ta know that you haven't hunted the spot yet, or the guy could of know about the spot before you and when he heard you knew of it he had to act on it fast. odds are he wasn't the first one there anyway. and the spot is still there so maybe the "expert" just cleaned up some of the junk off the surface for ya, i wouldn't give up on the location. or if ya wanna get even just throw a box of BB's all over the place and forget about it ;D

I have to say that I've been really surprised at the number of posters on your thread that have tried to make excuses for the scumbag who is actually a damned thief. Apparently, with the exception of Mrs. O, there is just no one here with any idea of what is right and fair. And, the one poster who called the young lady a "simpleton" went even FURTHER in establishing their own lack of good character.

I know, it was like an onslaught that caused me to bug out of my own thread! I know it's just a spot, and there are tons of other spots. Plus she's not retarded. She is autistic. People with autism might not have the necessary social skills for daily interaction, but they can have really high IQs. This girl is extremely left brained, and even thou she's fifteen she can do calculus and has really good artistic skills.

There are always other sites, but I wanted to make it clear to some people that people will use their information. The reason that it came to mind is my most recent site (not the one that was given away) forced me to do a ton of work on it. It's an old plantation that was burned down with numerous outbuildings that have all fallen into ruin, and I had to mow the grass first, cut up some fallen trees, remove rocks, and clean up a lot of trash. Once you actually put work into the land you don't want it to fall under someone's metal detector that isn't yours.

A scumbag and a damned thief? Because he beat the kid and her pal to a bunch of dirty clad and some bottle caps? Mel Fisher had to deal with scumbags and thieves. What the OP had to deal with was hardly the James Gang. Hardly the work of a scumbag or a thief. It's only junk in the ground.

Re: Never Tell Your Plans to a Hunter You Don't Know

Any of y'all old enough to remember Karl von Mueller and the "Treasure Hunters Manuals"? He had lots to say on the subject but essentially "keep your mouth shut". Before, during and *especially* after.

So, since this guy "beat the kid and her pal" to some clad and bottle caps it is OK in your book?? Had he stolen the girl's purse or Adventure Wolf's wallet, would that make a difference in YOUR view?? What if the SB found a mason jar full of gold coins on that property? Would THAT make a difference in your line of thought?? What if that SB came over to your house and stole your car? Well, no big deal; it was just some junk in your driveway. And after what you called the young lady and then bragged that you would "ply her with candy and ice cream"; you would deserve that...............and lots more.

It is not the SIZE of the theft. It is the THEFT itself.

If you thought what you were picking up in the ground is just "junk" then why do you treasure hunt?

Re: Never Tell Your Plans to a Hunter You Don't Know

Shortstack: I don't have your level of indignation over petty crap like this. And anyone who steals my car needs it more than I do. Welcome to it.

But all is not lost. I like you, Shortstack. You got fire and you're interesting. One of my favorite members on the forum to read. Honest!

So what I've done, I've included a character named "Shortstack" in the novel I'm writing in my personal pages titled: "The Deep And Emerald Sea." Not 15 minutes ago I posted chapter Dos. That's two (2) if there is any confusion. Your guy is only in it for a second but he has a good part. I laughed like heck on writing him in. Might be my best line of the book so far. Really. I laughed and laughed. You will too, I'm sure. You're a real sport. You'll find your namesake at the very beginning of Dos. The narrator (me) describes an event involving a shotgun that occurred to one of the other characters.

Now go read it and understand that not everyone on the forum can be in the book. I am using all forum member names to fill up the character's names. Kind of a fun thing for us to all read. Lots of guns and gold and pretty girls. Even a dog.

Now about a gold-filled Mason jar. I find one of those with Rain Woman standing behind me, I'm burying HER in the hole it came out of. You can't take chances where real treasure is concerned. And remember: always fly Qantas.

Wolf, I detect because I get a kick out of finding old silver coins. That is what I hunt for 90% of the time. No beach hunting, I'm not after jewelry. Money value is of no interest because finding a real haul has never happened to me and probably never will. Been doing this for over 20 years now.

I dig old coins because they are history and give me a kick on finding them. But I do not sell them or collect them. I give them away to other forum members who I'm in contact with and to a young couple I'm friends with in Key West. They MD too and like to collect the old silver.

I've never found a silver coin of any real monetary value and call all items "junk" because in my mind it is. Fun junk, but junk all the same. We should all lighten up over this "treasure" business.

Re: Never Tell Your Plans to a Hunter You Don't Know

Hola amigos,

I am a bit surprised at some of our fellow treasure hunters here; you think it is perfectly OK to just be a sneak, the metal detecting equivalent of claim jumping? How would you like it done to you? You do not know what lays buried in any particular spot, but if it has never been detected you stand a fair chance of finding something much more valuable than modern crap coins or pull tabs, and that is not what it is about anyway.

This may be a hobby for some of you, but not for everyone who does it. The so-called "expert" who hurried to grab the finds from under our amigo Adventure Wolf is no expert in my view, he is nothing but a claimjumper. I would never invite such a person to join us in a hunt, nor a prospecting trip, nor fishing or hunting or any outdoor activity. Such a person could never be trusted even with minor information. That attitude of who cares so long as I get it first is not limited to metal detecting and is not a sign of good character. Yes we may be viewed as modern day 'pirates' by non-treasure hunters, but even pirates had a code and were a brotherhood, you did not grab the booty ahead of your fellows.

Shame on you who think such behavior is perfectly acceptable.

Re: Never Tell Your Plans to a Hunter You Don't Know

White Gold, maybe my problem is I don't value these finds at all. It's like sport fishing to me. If some guy gets to my best spot first, big deal, I go somewhere else. It's just fish. Getting so worked up over nothing is not something I can relate to.

Re: Never Tell Your Plans to a Hunter You Don't Know

It is good that you don't get upset, but you are not doing it to someone else which is a different thing. I can't agree that it is just like fishing either, for fish swim around and relocate, re-stock areas that get 'fished out' but rare coins and jewelry once removed are gone - it may take another century for a spot to be 'good' again. The first to detect any particular spot has the greatest chance of finding something more than modern clad crap.

Re: Never Tell Your Plans to a Hunter You Don't Know

You got me on the fish moving around. I wish silver halves could migrate. I never find silver halves.

Re: Never Tell Your Plans to a Hunter You Don't Know

Well then amigo you must join me sometime, I know a place that has never yet failed to produce at least one per hunt. As you live quite some distance from me (and we are both far from that place I refer to) give me a little time and I will see if I can find a place close to you, that has some of the 'good stuff' like halves and dollars.

For our readers here - dig those big sounding 'hits' even if you are dead sure it is a beer can; I learned this the hard way, but silver dollars and halves often will give you a signal just like a danged old can.

You got it, Roy. If this had happened to me and the puke found a 1916D Merc. after sneaking in on MY research; I would be very unpleasant during my discussion with the SB. What Merc, one might ask? Well, the one the SB may have found at that site. No one but, HE knows what he found. That site may have gold coins in the $1, $2.50, $5 denominations; maybe a rose gold ring with a stone or even a heavy platinum ring with a stone. Could be anything imaginable. Part of the problem is, that dude could have found a valuable item he did not deserve. The OTHER part of the problem is HE searched that place first. That would be about like buying a brand new car and letting some stranger on the street drive it for the first week. I could use another, more potent example, but won't since this is a family forum. :icon_pirat:

Re: Never Tell Your Plans to a Hunter You Don't Know

:headbang: :headbang:

Personally, I cannot remember one single time that I went out metal detecting for junk (not on purpose, anyway). I'm always looking for good stuff!! (like that 1916D Merc) :laughing9: :laughing9:

Re: Never Tell Your Plans to a Hunter You Don't Know

Honest, Beth. I find a 1916 whatever dime I'll give it to you. No doubt you'd appreciate it more than me. I don't say this to be a smart guy. I give all finds away. That is unless I find my way into Fort Noxx. That might get my attention. LOL

OT

PS. I'm currently sitting on about 2 dozen wheat pennies going back to 1916 along with a 44 Merc and 46 Rosie dime I got recently. You want 'em Beth ? you PM me with your address I'll fire 'em off to your front door. No strings attached. It's all junk to me. This is a real offer.
