Hi all - Still learning. Went out for a short hunt leaning the maching still. Can anyone experience hunters at there help in IDing this rings and help how to clean it. Looks likes it Gold Plated and I see copper as well. Not sure but need help.

You could try dish soap and a toothbrush or boiling water with a little baking soda. Watch out though to much baking soda to quick will cause it to foam over and soak your stove top.

The ring is encrusted pretty good. Must have been in the salt water for a long time. Im not too sure if the stone is real diamond or not. But I can definitely see that there was gold. I working with a lot of elbow grease and its coming along. Will post some Pics.

Oh do anyone know whether electrosis would be a good thing to do here.

Also, how do I know how to ID this ring, there is no markings on it

And what about the stone.

I.D. as far as what? If you see copper then it's gold plated. The stone, for a quick diamond test you can do what's called a breath test. Breath on it really close through your mouth and immediately look to see if it holds moisture on the stone. If it's fake it will hold a fog for a second or two. No fog it's looking like a real diamond. It's been said that they don't set real diamonds in fake metals. You can buy a acid test kit and a diamond tester fairly cheap on eBay. I have found that when I find an item that is encrusted like that a good soaking in CLR will often dissolve the encrustation. When it is encrusted like that it is primarily calcium and CLR will usually dissolve it. BUT, be warned! if it is a junk ring it will sometimes dissolve or discolor the item as well. In my opinion it could be 10K at best, 10k gold is less than 50% gold and it is the alloyed metals that will attract the encrustation like that. 10K does not survive in salt water environment like 14K and greater does. The copper color you are seeing may just be a discoloration of the 10k or may be copper, had to say at this point. As far as an ID, the ring type looks like a "Nugget Ring" and as far as the gold content, that is yet to be determined. another quick test to determine if the stone could be genuine is that fake stones in junk rings are glued in, real stones in precious metals including silver are set in with prongs or a channel holding the stone in. From what I can see in your picture, I don't see any thing holding your stone in, looks glued, if it is glued the CLR will also dissolve the glue and the stone will fall out. Any way good luck on the clean up. Show us your efforts, I would like to see it after clean up, even if it is junk.

Thank Digger will try the CLR this week and post the pic. I do see that there is a little gold but it is slowly going away.

I have found 3 different "nugget" rings. All were goldplated copper. I think what you found is one like the one I found last year. See ring on right.

I had good results from soaking a gold plated crusty bracelet in lemon juice over night. The part where the gold plating was worn off turned pink (copper) and where the gold plate was still on cleaned up real nice.

Here are the results. Still need a lot more cleaning but this is what I was able to do - Soaked it in water and dish soap, and tried out the CLR. The ring is 18kHGF and the stone appears to be CZ.

Any other ideas on how to clean this junk up - Yes its a ring.
