New cellar hole finds deep in park woods

I’ve been looking at a dot deep in the Parkwoods for a few years now. The hike to get to the spot is a little sketchy and the 1950s lidar photos showed that the site may have been mined over.

The site initially shows up in the 1860s map and by the 1960s aerials it’s gone. When I finally got to the general area on Sunday, the coal mining pit holes were evident, but also a widespread area of old glassware and pottery, signaling the homes dump area. Eventually, I spotted several areas with daffodils and tulips, which led me to the foundation walls.

Anyone have an idea on the brass feather or fern piece? Also, the cufflink with the NSA glass or enameling was a first for me. Thanks.

You need to spend some serious time there It looks like a lot of different items could show up almost any where you dig HAVE FUN

Awesome ID, I found the brass eagle for this same hat about a 1/2 away in these woods at another cellar. They were probably in the same unit. Thx!

Nice group of recoveries Thad. that is definitely a plume holder to an 1830s - 1850s shako hat. I found this one, which was identified as from an artillery hat, at that place i took you to where the paper mill used to be.

Thx Steve! I knew it was an old piece based on the other items around, but had no idea it was an interesting military relic. One of those - I’ll post on Tnet and see if this is anything. Crazy you found one as well on the other side of Allegheny County.
