New Hunter from Oklahoma

Hello,
I am a new hunter from Central Oklahoma. I have access to some properties for metal detecting in Eastern Oklahoma County but really doubt there is anyting to find as they are mostly developed with homes or fields that didnt have much going on with them. I am always going back and forth between Lawton and OKC but like to travel when possible with my family. Looking to get the kids some experience with hunting and detecting. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get started where we might actually luck into some interesting finds? Should we join a group to get started? Anyone know if the owners at Buzzards Roost are ok with detecting even there's no digging involved. These may be dumb questions, but we are brand new.

My suggestion is research first.
Here is a few treasure stories for Central OK

• Lost Spanish Treasure: Spanish explorers and miners are believed to have buried valuables along routes like the Santa Fe Trail and the California Road. These legends suggest hidden hoards of gold and silver waiting to be rediscovered.

I just moved from there to Texas last year. Miss the Backporch Draft House. I hunted on a huge ranch between Lawton and OKC and will ask if it is available. I don’t think he will allow it for others but will be worth a shot.

I posted a video some short while back I found on youtube about the Buzzard's Roost. I've passed by there but have never stepped foot on the property. It's been a while so I can't remember exactly, but either the owner or a member of the owner's family is a forum member here and posted a comment about people trespassing there. So I would say that no, they don't want people on their property.
Practically all of my finds are from hunting the yards of older homes as well as parks, churches, and schools. Any time I ever tried hunting an old farm place the finds were very few and very far between.

You’re welcome, but he said no. He let me as a favor for my father (even tossed down some coins he knew I’d find so I wouldn’t get discouraged on my first attempt). But he doesn’t want people wandering around and digging and I can respect that even though I don’t see the harm.

Well welcome to the group. The Spanish weren't really associated much with the Sante Fe trail or the California Road. However, the Old Spanish Trail ran up the north fork of the Red River in SWOK. I've been to Buzzard's Roost a few times and walked all over it, no problems, but times may have changed. If it's posted, respect the signs. Best advice I can give you is get Steve Wilson's book, Oklahoma Treasures and Treasure Tales.
