New Site offers up some nice Civil War & other finds!

Hey Y'all. For those of you that don't know, I've started back school working on my Masters Degree and school started back about 3 weeks ago and it has been FEET to the FLOOR non-stop leaving very little time for anything else but studying and homework. However, I did get back out to a new field site that I got permission at last weekend to scout around. There are 4 fields, two of which are tremendous in size and they sit at a very salient point during the War for Confederate and Union Troops as thousands of Rebels and Yanks were in this general area building up their forces in anticipation for a great big battle. Last weekend while out there, I dug a couple of goodies including a very nice 1917 Standing Liberty Type 2 quarter that photo grades on PCGS between 35 & 40.
These fields have some great potential and they have stuff scattered about there should be a couple housesites/campsites somewhere on them but it will take me some time to work them.
Yesterday I started out with a couple bullets including some fused buck from a Buck n Ball load (Very Cool). Then dug some old pieces of shoe buckles and a couple D-Buckles... The prize of the day however came from a high point in the left of the field. I had just dug a couple Minieballs when I got this pretty signal that turned out to be a Civil War era lead-filled "U.S." Rosette! I dug one similar to this one years ago but not as pretty so I was very happy about it and suspect this high point was an overnight cavalry spot as I also found some small caliber .36 & .44 Colts. I also found a Firman's Celebration Medal that is VERY SIMILAR to the one one the cover of last month's (Feb.) American Digger magazine.
I will be going back out there this weekend to enjoy some more Civil War relics, hopefully something Confederate will pop out as this field lays right on the Fall Line of the Confederate/Union Boundary between Virginia and Hampton Roads.

Great stuff as usual Josh. Love that rosette. Watch out for Mike and that E-trac. I hear there the cat's meow. Take care buddy, best of luck on your return trip. :icon_thumleft:

Thanks Jess....It's been tough the last few weeks finding time to get out more than once a week. I'm sure Mike knows how to handle that Minelab's "Alien Talk" or so I like to call it ;D ;D ;D Hopefully I can find another nice Honey Hole somewhere out there this coming weekend. :icon_thumleft:
LOL! :D
That's only if you push that sensitivity up too high.
I think Josh gives anyone a run with their money with what he uses. Look at his freakin banners! :notworthy:

Re: New Site offers up some nice Civil War & other finds!

Those fields are why I love living in this area of VA! Now if only I had the balls to ask for permission :laughing9: I look forward to seeing what you pull out of there :icon_thumright:

Wow! I wish we had fields like that on Long Island. Fields that big should be able to produce for years to come. Good luck!

Thanks BK, YES, it is a BIG one....and its only one of four.

Yeah, you got it Doug, it was used for a short time as a nipple protector by some soldier out in that field. Good eyes  :icon_thumleft:

There's my long lost Rusky Huntin' Partna. How was the trip? As for the Firemans Medal, each year Firemen all over the country, from state to state, would hold regional and national Firemens Conventions/Celebrations where they would honor the firemen and their trade. They would have certain amusements, along with several different types of friendly competitions such as axe throwing or team events to see who could put out mock up fires the quickest. I remember fyrffytr found one much like mine some time back (and a match to the one on the Feb. American Digger cover: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php?topic=377051.0 ). They still hold these types of conventions today but this medal probably dates to the late 1800s, a time when they were very popular.

Re: New Site offers up some nice Civil War & other finds!

Been a long time since I've had a day of hunting like you had, and I can't even remember when I've dug a Standing.
Kudos!
Carl
