I was planning to set up a tracking spreadsheet for 2007 for myself to track how much of a complete set of the different standard US coins I found in circulation in 2007. For example, track if a whole set of Franklin Half Dollars could be found in 2007.
If there is enough interest, it is not much more work to add a second set of columns to track the same coins for the group.
I am not exactly sure how it would work since it would become one very long topic, but as the different dates/mintmarks are found, report them to me and I can keep a running list that I will update regularly. Also could break it up where there is one topic for each coin type, i.e. pennies, nickels, etc. I am open to suggestions on that part.
The list of coins I would propose to track are the following, due to them being at least semi-regularly found:
Indian head pennies
Lincoln wheat pennies
Lincoln memorial pennies
V-Nickels
Buffalo Nickels
Jefferson Nickels
Barber Dimes
Mercury Dimes
Roosevelt Dimes
Barber Quarters
Standing Liberty Quarters
Washington Quarters
Barber Half Dollars
Walking Liberty Half Dollars
Franklin Half Dollars
Kennedy Half Dollars
Eisenhower Dollars
Susan B Anthony Dollars
Sacagawa Dollars
The list would include all regularly issued coins as well as all issues that were not intended for circulation such as proof sets and clad and silver examples of the proof coins would be listed separately.
I would propose the following rules:
1) Coins must be found in circulation, (rolls from the bank, in the "take a penny" jar at the local gas station, in change from the store, etc.)
2) Coins found while metal detecting do not count
3) Coins found prior to 2007 do not count.
4) Coins found buying others coin collections, old piggy jars at rummage sales, etc. do not count as they are no longer truly in circulation.
5) Only coins which can be identified (either by legible dates or using marking that are a single year type such as the 1883 No Cents V-Nickel) count.
6) Coins with counterfeited dates do not count.
7?) Still trying to decide if dateless coins that are treated with acid to determine the date count for this or not. Any comments?
Any thoughts, interest, rule change suggestions.
We have a few days before the new year starts.
If there is interest let's get it set up properly to start the year. If not, I'll just do it for my own coins.
