I had a youth soccer tournament out of town planned for Saturday/Sunday, so I knew my only real window to hunt would be early AM on Monday. The previous week I had been researching a big county park nearby that I have only been to once, with minimal luck, but it?s very close. Friday was a wash out out with steady constant rain, but I had an hour and wanted to check out my research on one old home site from the 1862 map and corresponding lidar imagery, no note of this home after 1870 map. Found a nice close parking spot, forded a flooded stream, then climbed a near vertical 30? mud cliff deer path. But at the top was the hole, chimney brick pile and stones surrounding it. The stone foundation was totally into and flattened around the surrounding area, normally there is a good portion of the foundation standing. So I had high hopes for Monday going through my mind all weekend.

Here are Monday?s finds.

Small cent is a 1857 Flying Eagle. Sorry pic needs to be viewed 90 degrees counter clockwise to see the date at the bottom.
IMG_1115.webp

Lots of pewter spoon fragments.
IMG_1122.webp

Not as many flat buttons as I would have thought, but the ground is very wet and full of iron. I need to go back when it dries out and I can hear the small targets better.

Three nice CW Eagle I?s also popped.

IMG_1119.webp

A couple of pewter doll house tea cups.
IMG_1120.webp
IMG_1121.webp

Some personal items. The arrow looking thing was found 2? from the circle pin, not sure if they were connected at one point.

IMG_1125.webp

This key was about 20? from the hole, not sure if it was from this homesite or contamination from nearby old neighborhood.

IMG_1127.webp

Here is the rest of the stuff.

IMG_1124.webp

I rarely find spots that are this loaded and virgin, here is my handful from the previous 2 hunts at a different part of town, more typical.

IMG_1128.webp

I think the round piece is that mystery ?E? token thingy people find and the markings on the ring are in the next pic, not sure how old it is.

Good luck out there!

Solid hunt Thad.

Def worth the trudge and hard work to locate the site.

Hope you turn up some early silver there.

Jer

Awesome hunt!!! I love the variety of pieces found!

What a good day... they are great finds....

Stellar hunt Thad. All that in one AM hunt, you must have been digging constantly. Like Jer said, should be seated, or even capped bust silver there.

Thx Jer! Nowadays I spend more time researching than digging. I had a couple nice tight signals in the mid 20?s. My eyes were definitely looking for that silver rim in the plug, turned out to be wiped coppers. I haven?t dug the crappy high tone signals yet, might be where the silvers are hiding.

Thx Steve! Yeah, it was a fun hunt. If I went more than 5 minutes without a good signal I turned back to the cellar and would get back on track. Very little modern trash here, but lots of iron and chunks of lead to deal with around the cellar and the flat ?yard? area is full of old slag. I?m sure I?m not getting any depth there. My silver sniffing abilities are no where near Jer?s, but I?ll keep at it.

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

keep digging it, awesome spot, love it

wow, what a great place, take a screen next time and get it all.

Great finds! I am a total newbie so please excuse my ignorance. What map and Lidar sites do you use? Anyone else please feel free to chime in.

Thanks,
Benny

I?m in Pennsylvania. Penn State University compiled LIDAR and Historical Arcgis maps. Each state and county will have different resources, some Tnet members also use Historical Aerials. Good luck!

What a fantastic collection of interesting artifacts...love the teacups and eagle buttons, like others have said, gotta be some silver lingering thereabouts!

Congrats, and keep digging!
