I want to get started in MD. i live in Atlanta near some civil war sites. The ground his generally hard clay. I don't know if it is highly mineralized or not.

Lots of people have recommened Tesoro. I guess the Compadre is the bottom of the line. Can someone explain what the detectors that are a little more money provide in way of functionality? I don't want to invest money in a detector that I outgrow too quick, but i looked on the tesoro site and couldn't make sense of the importance of what was different about each.

If you couldn't make sense of what was on the Tesoro site about the features of the different models you definitely need to do more reading as it would take more space here to bring you up to speed I am sorry to say.

Many of the lower entry models have a set ground balance. This is fine for most of the country, but for most depth you should have one with manual ground balance. Pinpoint is also a feature that is important for locating the coin in the grass so you can pop it out of the grass without having to dig a hole. Something that can get you shot in the back of the head these days.

Many will suggest the Garrett Ace 250 as a good detector and it is for the money if you think you need a screen. But the Tesoro's like the Umax, Cibola and Vaquereo are also great but have the lifetime warranty. Nothing to sneeze at.........

well if the Sandman recommends something ,your gettin the golden word :notworthy: I agree fully with Sandman look into the Tesoro machine great machines for the least amount of wasted money on bells an whistles you don't need as a beginner.

Hi, welcome,
First, find out from the local detectorists about the mineralization of the ground. If there is moderate to high mineralization, a manual ground balance will get the best stability, depth and sensitivity results if you use it correctly/often, as Sandman said. The relics tend to be deeper, so this is important.

If you can get away with using a factory presest ground balance, you will save some money and shorten your learning curve. You may sacrifice some performance though, depending on the ground conditions. I prefer a manual ground balance, or an automatic GB (on my Lobo).

As Sandman said, you may want to be a little more familiar with the terminology that he specifically mentioned... Most sites have a glossary and FAQs, including Tesoro.

You can always call Tesoro (me) if you have any questions, or need direction. We have a lot of folks doing very well with both the Compadre and Silver Umax. I would lean towards those 2 detectors, or the maybe a Vaquero or Cibola if your budget is not a big concern. I would be happy to answer your questions....so would your local Tesoro dealer. A hands on demonstration is the best, if there is a dealer close to you.

Let me know if you have any questions.....that are not answered here.
