I am totally new to metal detecting (xmas gift) but excited to learn. I am going to the Alabama gulf area and Florida panhandle next week and would like to practice on the beaches. Is is legal (ok) to metal detect on any of the beaches in that area? What about the beachside parks in Alabama and Florida ( I think they are county maintained). Do I need to ask permission from someone, of just head out to the beaches? Thanks for your help.

You can check the web for Al. but Florida is OK. If asked, it's better to appear dumb and get off with a warning.

To learn how to hunt a beach visit thegoldenolde.com/

Your detector may not handle the wet salt sand. Turn don't the Sensitivity and hunt slower.

The Panhandle has ( as I recall ) some areas he can't hunt. If you are in the hotel strip, no issues, but double check the parks for I remember some national park land.
