I just recived this in my inbox from NGC NGC Cert #2102197-001NGC Description1916 STANDING 25CNGC Grade ILLEGIBLE DATE Label https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/2102197-001/other/ I had a Standing Liberty quater I figured its worth it to try to find out if it was the 1916 or the 1917. I stated that on the submission form 1916 /17Standing liberty when I called they said they would try to ID it by the details. I got the email graded finalized shipped and this above. I know the date is illegible they listed it on this as a 1916 does this mean they did Id it by the detail differences between the 1916 and 17 ??????? Someone help before I fall head first into the Booby Hatch Thanks Tommy

Hey Tommy - I'm sure you know the types differences on SLQs and they clearly saw yours is a Type 1, but there were some Type 1s made in 1917 before the chainmail was added. I know of no way they could have told the difference though between a '16 and '17 Type 1. Unless there was enough of a curve on the last date digit to clarify the date, even though the overall date is still "illegible." Meaning, they couldn't see the date, but they know it's a Type 1 and they know the last digit must be a "6" because they can see a slight curve, thus it must be a 1916. Only way I can think of - hope it helps...

Seems to Me that if it was in fact a 1916, then that’s how they’d list it. With the scope of verification they have, they must have made out the 6. Just My opinion. Congrats Tommy!!!

There are actually subtle differences between the 1916 and 1917 that you may be able to identify even with the date 100% gone.

Can you elaborate on what those are for the '16 and '17 if both are Type 1? I'd be interested to know that for my own knowledge. Thanks mate.

I would just contact them Tommy, and ask them to verify the label on the coin. If they labeled it a 16, then you would think its a 16.

I know you're frustrated Tommy , but congrats on even finding an SLQ ( especially a type I ) When I found my first a couple of years ago in a tiny Colorado town ( a no date type II) I was over the moon .

Tommy,
Id call it a 1917 for several reasons:
1. Liberty's head on a '16 breaks through the rim; not on your coin.
2. Shield rivets on a '16 are weak/almost non-existent; on yours, the rivet detail is still very pronounced= '17.
3. Your excuse wall lines (under 'we trust') are relative sharp; on a '16 in this condition the wall lines are worn or not visible.
Just IMO,
Don....
