Nice 1864 IHP & relics

I got out to a couple pounded cellar holes this weekend for short afternoon hunts. Still messing with the Beach1 in the dirt. If this mode does anything well, it at least is quieting the contestant pounding of the -6 to -8 iron tones while searching in all metal modes. Definitely has allowed some good signals to come through and repeatable.

Couple IHPs popped out, but this one is nice.



It also has a 180 degree rotation on the flip. Not sure if that is common for this year.

Nice relics; really like that key. That Indian Head Penny looks great. I assume you used Renaissance wax or something similar. Even using that stuff, I can never get my coins to look that great. Congrats.

Thx! Not sure on value of reverse rotation, does not seem to be a rare error. The condition and consistent patina probably add more value.

Thx! The IHP was found at a site where all the old copper coins come out great, one swiper greenies. I’ve found LC’s, KG’s, 2 Centers and IHPs that have been well preserved. To keep the dark green patina from drying to a dull light green I have used Vaseline, nose grease or olive oil. A little light Andres pencil work to remove any stubborn dirt then a final coat. Renn wax will seal but not add “moisture” to this type of copper coin and the coin looks good initially with the Renn Wax but then it dries out mottled light green. I’ve seen some guys doing a combo of initially doing the oil, wiping off, setting for a week, then Renn wax.

Definitely an “L” right above the ribbon... I wish!! Trust me, I looked at this coin a dozen different ways trying to find that letter...

Yes, the Andres 000 soft steel wool pencil is my go to for old copper coins. Keep in mind that like 1 in 20 IHP’s I find have been preserved in this perfect buried environment; very good drainage, optimal minerals in the soil, no fertilizer, not compacted from heavy foot/animal/vehicle traffic. This type of coin is a bit of Andres pencil and some oil to keep from drying out. Other IHPs may need heavy Andres work, peroxide and more Andres and still be a below average dug coin.

The IHP is in such good condition I think the best cleaning solution is not to clean it. Just my thoughts, though.

Really nice group of finds.
That IHC has some great patina and the green is attractive as well. (I strained my eyes for that "L" on the ribbon as well.)
FYI- The US uses coin alignment for coins. When flipping US coins over, flip top to bottom and the orientation of the reverse should be right side up.

Lots of countries (Great Britain for example) use medal alignment where flipping right to left has the coins reverse and obverse right side up.
