I found a couple of items that belonged to my Great Grand Father.
A birthday scripture book.

The quality of handwriting is amazing.

I'm not sure why the pics loaded side-ways.

Here's another example of the handwriting.

Hi ddu I love the container, good to see things being handed down and kept in the family. I have the Same problem with the photos. I'm guessing it's because I'm holding my phone sideways when I take the photo.

Thanks Eagleye,
Yeah I usually crop my pics before I upload them. I must have missed that step, and I probably took them sideways.

I know nothing about my grand dad let alone my great grand dad.
After inspecting this book I'm itching to learn about the man.

Ancestry.com is really good. I found parts of my father's family to 1569 in the Netherlands and St Marrten. Also one of my ancesters was one of the only convicts to get off death row in sing sing prison.

Thanks, I've been meaning to try that site.
I do know a lot about my first Ancestors to arrive in Aus.
Great story too, they are both famous in Aus, Henry Angel who came over on the notorious "the Neptune" he later went with Hume and Hovel (two explores) he was given pardon for his crime that he was falsely accused of. But he told the Brits to"nick off" he loved Australia and wanted to stay.
And Mary Wade, she was the youngest female convict to be sent over at 13 years of age for the theft of a petticoat, she only just made the voyage as she was given the death penalty.

The cool thing is, Angels last place of residence before he past is still in the family, it's where I've been doing most of my detecting.

After them I don't know much, Australia was not good at keeping records back then, and all of my grand parents died before I was old enough to talk with them :(
And sadly on my Dads side I know even less :(

I'm not much for traveling outside of the U.S. but Australia is on my bucket list. If I was ever to leave here that's the number one place id move. It's so beautiful. What year did they start moving convicts to the penal colony? I bet the early days there were crazier than our wild west. My father always said his side of family were a bunch of horse thieves. Id like to think that the ones who lived in St Maarten were the pirates lol
