Hey all, just wanted to get some opinions....I haven't had any success with Halves yet, and been doing about $100 in dimes per day the past week with only 1 keeper. Most are CWR's. I know I'm not doing a lot of volume and it seems the average with dimes is 1 keeper per box, so it's not too bad. But I did pick up a box of nickels and did a little better.

I know war nickels are only 35%, but do you all find much success with them? I know ideally Halves are #1 and Dimes #2, but what does everyone think about nickels??

I like searching nickels but they do take quite a bit longer to search than dimes - for me anyway.

So I've started searching more dime boxes lately but I'll still probably do a box of nic's every weekend or so.

Good luck & HH.

I know others don't understand this, and scoff at the idea, but I find more profit per hour from PENNIES than any other denomination. Most say it is not worth it, but I've done okay with them. the fact that halves here are 1 silver per every 8.3 boxes for 2011 as I end the year makes it very dry for halves. Gilmore Happy has the same rsults here. So I do pennies and nickels.

As for nickels. I keep pre-1960 also. Can't say how I do, since I haven't sold any yet, but I know I have quite a few stacked up at least. And yes, silver nickels are not bad. I get one for every 1.6 boxes so far this year. That's less profit though than halves. Add the old ones in, and maybe nickels are better. But nothing compares to my pennies and ryedale. Consistent. I can't go an hour without a profit. Can't say THAT when I found 3 silvers in 55 boxes two years ago. Or even at the average of this year! The consistency is what wins. And yes, I sell pennies when I want, not "just" hoarding for the future. read the older posts on pennies and Ryedales, and you'll see what I mean. :-)

I've had really good luck with nickels. Out of the 7 or 8 boxes I've done, I've gotten 10 war nickels and 1 buffalo nickel. I also have a number of nice 1939-1949 nickels I've saved too. I've never had any luck with dimes.(but only been through a few boxes so far)

I do about 4 - 6 boxes of Nickels a week and average about 1-3 War Nickels and 3-5 Buffalo Nickels per box. I keep all pre-1960 Nickels that are in decent shape as well. I find from a pure collecting standpoint that Nickels are the best (for me at least). Now as far a time and profit are concerned, you're not gonna get rich any time soon from them.

I have never find a war nickle and I do not really care about Bufalos.

A coin dealer in my area pays a premium just for certain bufalos but not all.

I've been having quite a bit of luck with war nickels lately. For only $100 a box its not bad, the only problem is it takes time to search them. There is not a lot of silver in the war nickels but every little bit adds up. Still haven't found any Buffalo's yet but they are definitely out there.

For me doing a box of nickels is all about the fun of the hunt, low chance of a big score but almost guaranteed to find something worth keeping.

AMEN!!! +1

If you are after troy ounces nickels is not the game to play.

If you are after old coins and filling sets, it is a good one to go with.

If they change nickels to steel or zinc they'll be worth hoarding also!

I think you are right Heed. I was just posting on another thread that it's probably just a matter of time before they change the comp. of nickels to steel or zinc like you said and people will be hoarding nickels like they currently hoard copper cents - esp when pm prices increase to all-time highs again.

Hi JRF30,
What are you finding profitable in pennies? Is it key dates or errors or just bulk wheats? Very curious.
Thank you.
Happy Holidays--

In my opinion the change in composition can be expected, if the cost, to produce a one nickel coin, will go over 7 cents. All depends on the nickel spot price.

Currently a US nic is worth just over $.05 and I believe they were worth as high as $.066 earlier this summer and it probably won't be long before they are worth $.07 and more which will increase the chances of a comp. change like you say and start to get the attention of coin hoarders.

Nic's & copper cents aren't nearly as good an investment as silver of course but they are both a much better store of value than the USD.

HH & Merry Xmas to all! :icon_santa:

Your box will be more fun than my. Yes, silver is better to invest, but it is scarce comparing to copper and nickel.

I dont search alot of nickles or Quarters but I get 30.00 in nickles and 10 in quarters each week. A survival web site said to save them now every one is more copper than nickel. I keep what I get (start saving for retirement). Its easy to spend dollars and harder to spend change. I havent found silver but got alot of pre 60 nickles. Its fun and somthing fun to do with the kids.Ill take the advice of going to halfs might upit to 50.00 a week. Thanks for the advice
