Nickles

War nickels are 35% silver and are a definate when dated 1943-1945, but some 1942 nickels are also silver war nickels. You can tell because the mintmark is above the dome on the back of the nickel(it's a big letter, you can't miss it). Even philly marked their war nickels with a big "P".

Also, look for these key dates: 1938d 1938s 1939d 1939s 1950d and some people find it hard to find 2009 p and 2009 d nickels, those are known as they key date of the newer jefferson Nickels.

Buffalo nickels(1913-1938) and liberty "V" nickels(1883-1912) are still out there as well. The 1912-s and 1886 V nickels can demand A LOT of money, but they are next to impossible to find.

Hope this helps, any more questions, feel free to ask. (I did not quite understand your question, so I decided to explain this to you)

:)

Good Luck with the nickel searching. There are other dates besides the one's mention that are worth saving. I will touch on a few. Taking up where another poster left off, 41S Large S is tough quite a bit tougher than the small S, Both 42's that are non war, 46S,47S,48S,49S,50P,All 51's,52S,53S,54S, 55P, and 58P. Personall I keep all of them that have a mintage under 100 Million. I hope this helps. Thanks and Good Luck. Dennis.

Sorry about the picture. But I do have the 1947s you were talking about.what was special about that coin?

Your doing good. The 47S isn't worth much over face but they are worth saving. Old Jefferson nickels are cool but they don't get much respect (Other than the Wars) I search a ton of nickels and what I do is try to put together rolls of pre 1960, when it gets to the point of having what I think is to many I release them back to the wild, most dates you will not have to worry about that but the 57D,58D and 59D for example were made in bunches. Get you a book and put together a set (1938-61). That is the only one I do, I could care less about the newer nickels. The Harris and Whitman books both have production numbers and you will learn fast about which ones to keep. I hope this helps. Good Luck. Dennis.

I love all the old coins. It reminds me of my grandpa showing me his old coin collection. As a kid I did'nt respect it,I would give anything to go back and hear him talk about the depression and old silver coins.I love to pull out the old stuff and think of where its been and what was going on in the world when it was being spent.Kids these days don't know or respect this old stuff. Thanks for all your help!!!!!!

You are Welcome any time I can help just let me know. The most important thing to remember is how many they made of each year, there were app 2.5 million 1950D's minted (making it the hardest one to find) in my opinion (I have only found 1 in hundreds of boxes searched) and the #'s go up from there as far as production goes. Good Luck. Dennis.
