Dug this up in area where I have found lots of stuff from late 1700’s to mid 1800’s. However, people have hunted and thrown random garbage on my property for 100+ years. So not sure if this broken metal object is old or from 1970 😁
it almost appears to have had possibly green paint or some type of metal sealant on the front. Also might have had a circular (but broken) shape on end. Any ideas would be great
* would someone be kind enough to explain how to mark items “solved” I found some instructions from years ago and that did not work
thanks

Lock side plate off a gun.
(Opposite side of stock from hammer.)
Blackpowder era.

The screws went through your piece into the lock plate on the other side.

Your side plate could be shaped by the builder.
By region and by "school" and by personal whim of the builder if desired.
You dig into it enough in research and you might find if it was made in your area ,or farther away.

Gun parts could be bought by a builder too. But soft brass made it easy to change the shape....
