Not much to look at, but it's an item off my wish list finally.

Today I hunted a house built in the 50s and had a fun and productive day. I could not believe how "clean" the front yard was. I dug pretty much everything pictured in the front yard and found only a brass shell casing (9mm) and two pull tabs. That was it for trash. Nice huh?

Since I started metal detecting in January I've wanted to find a buffalo nickel and today I was luck enough to find one. All I have done to clean it is use a toothbrush and some baking soda paste. I would love to clean it enough to see if it has a date. What is the recommended cleaning method for nickels? The three silvers are #s 47-49 this year. Thanks for looking and HH.

Oh No! What I mean was the item from my wish (buffalo nickel) list isn't much to look at.........the buffalo nickel. The silvers shined up nicely.

Congrats on knocking one off the bucket list. I was in the group and dug 7 Jefferson's. No one else mention they dug one. All silver hounds including Tom. Start digging some nickels Tom and you might get that buffalo. Expect a few pull tabs. Just got to be looking for them. Knew it was a long shot to get a buffalo but a couple of older coins have been found at that site. I ran a extremely tight coin pattern. Oldest one yet is a 1870 Shield. Also 2 Rosies and a 41 George found there yesterday. Can't look for nickels all day. lol JR

I have not been able to pinpoint the issue yet, I strongly suspect that it had something to do with day light savings time ending, however, I have not ruled out solar flares.

I clean my buffs the same way as Indians. Peroxide to get the dirt off then into the olive oil

I generally tumble all my clad (nickels, dimes, quarters) and they come out looking good. My fear is that I might tumble off any date if there is even any date left on the nickel. Perhaps I'll zap it for a few minutes and see what happens.

Do not zap your nickel; it will turn pink.

Make this gentle solution:
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon vinegar
2 tablespoons water

Let your nickel soak for 3-4 hours, hit it with a toothbrush, then return it to the solution with the other side facing up. I have cleaned many buffalo nickels this way and have recovered dates where I didn't think I would.

Hey Larry............I boiled some peroxide and soaked it in that for a bit and brushed it and repeated till I was able to see a date of 1935. The coin however is still very dark so I will give your recipe a shot and see what it does. Thanks for sharing.
