I purchased this framed picture for $6.00 back a few years ago. I was just cleaning up the basement and came across it. I never figured out if the person in the picture or the person he gave the picture to was famous back in 1933 but I always felt it looked important.

Does anyone know who these people were?

the giver -- j elliott hall (wealthy power company owner *-- possible -- fiscal backer / freind )

there appears to be other info as well on it (on right hand side see part of it ) see post by af 1773*-- looks like * newark, n j

Thanks for all the feedback.

I think the writing in the right hand corner is the name of the photo studio but I can't make it out. I assume the studion was located in Newark NJ. I did see the information about the actor, Walter F. Scott, who died in New York in 1940 which would tie into the time of the photo which is 1933. Newark is very close to New York with a train line between the two. Still have no clue who J. Elliott Hall is...there was someone by that name that purchased the Alamo Light and Power Company back in the 30s. I'm just not sure what the connection would be between him and an actor.

money might be the "connection"---hallvery well could have been a "money man" or "backer " investment type person --- these wealthy backer types were a very important type of person for folks in the movies or plays to "pal" around with --since hall bought a power company --clearly he was a man of means (wealthy)

A Walter F. Scott was elected State Treasurer of Vermont in 1914. Also a mayor of Sommerville, NJ by that name in 1953. Plenty of others, too, in that era. I suspect J. Elliott Hall was the Penn Mutual insurance super salesman. He was a big deal and his advice to salesmen was extensively cited in a book called How I Raised Myself from Failure to Success in Selling by Frank Bettger.

I could have sworn if said J. Elliott Wolf? But too many of you are seeing it as Hall. Monty

I can 'see' what you see too Monty. But the 'W' is a classic 'H' in cursive. Your 'f' (as in 'Wolf') really looks like an 'f' but I think that it's a lazy 'l' (pronounced 'el' <stupid font!>).

Which is strange, because a handwriting analyst would say this 'J. Elliott Hall' was a pessimist in nature by ending his signature that way (leading down, not up). Pretty strange, for a successful salesman.

Lucky Guy and One Man's Trash,
I think you are right about the J. Elliott Hall being the Penn Mutual guy. It is the right time frame and area. So I'm going with the Insurance salesman to the actor.

Thanks for everyones help on this one.

Gosh, my insurance agent has never sent me an autographed picture. I am hurt! :D But come to think of it, my agent died about a month ago. Maybe it was one of the things he intended to do before he got cut short? M :D nty
