Nothing good about a hernia

Got back from the doc's today. She said it was probably just fatty tissue that went through (I'll do an ultrasound later to confirm). In this case, it' safe to just live with it (as long as there's no pain). BUT, what became more of a problem during the visit was the high blood pressure. 187 when I went in, and 192 when I left. She told me that she doesn't want me to leave with it that high and insisted on a pill that 'should' immediately reduce it. I also left with a months supply of [free] blood pressure meds. She told me I was a walking time-bomb. Sooo, another wake up call. Oh-boy.

What was your other bp number?

Can't remember, but the high number was apparently more of a concern than the lower(?). I know the lower number is just as important, and I have my own BP checker here, and I'll look that up and post it later. But again, the fact the high number was so high was a big concern for her. Hence, the fact that she said "I can't let you leave today with that pressure". I, of course know that they can't involuntarily commit me to a hospital, but... the fact that she said that was a wake up call. Incidentally, when she gave me that pill that was supposed to "immediately drop my pressure" (I left right after taking it), after I got home, I immediately felt quite 'loopy'. I was later talking on the phone and I had trouble thinking. I couldn't think of common words that I used every day during work. I took my BP and it had only dropped by about 5 points, but the heart rate was down to ~63 (versus ~95 when they first took it at the doc's office). It felt like I had two glasses of whine, without the side effects of alcohol.

I also told her about my agoraphobia and how it could possibly be that I was absolutely freaking out just during the walk into the doctors office. She asked me about taking drugs to for that... thank fully, she is from india (where I understand that they are a big fan of natural cures versus chemicals). I told her that I knew about the zoloft, etc., and that potential problems they themselves have, and that I think it's truly 'in my head', and that my brain needs to fix what ever is wrong with it without chemicals... she totally agreed. In fact (and I'm quite proud of myself here), but I told her that I knew that valum and zanex is good for taking the edge off, but I wouldn't want those type of drugs either, unless there were non-habit forming. She agreed again there too. AND, with my long hair and somewhat 'druggie' looking appearance (long hair/goatee), I hope she got the message that I was not an illegal drug user. High school, sure... but that's a LONG time ago. In all, despite her recently getting out of residency, I was really impressed with her. In all, she spend about 45 minutes talking and examining me. I've NEVER had that with any other primary in the past. In fact, I think I might have a new crush. LOL.

In fact, I think I might have a new crush. LOL.

Maybe that's the REAL reason your bp and heartrate went up!!

I know the "new" thing is to just worry about the top number, but, truth be told - they are both important.

I have been present when a man with a bp of 120 (top number) stroked out - his bottom number was almost 120 also. Nervousness, pain, not feeling well, not enough sleep - it all can play into the blood pressure. Plus, sometimes you get different readings from different arms.

Oh - and having a crush on the doc can make it change, too. :headbang: :headbang:

Yeah watch all meds ever taken! Know the (oh god it left me),
Know the interactions/contradictions, not only with other meds,
but with natural substances, too (licorice, blood thinners, grapefruit, etc......)
Stay in the know.

Even meds you have taken before can slap ya once in awhile when you least expect it!!

You never know how a med is going to react. I still remember the day - the first day - and the last day - that my hubby took a steroid (doctor-prescribed).

He took it, and I said, well, don't go anywhere for about 20 minutes or so - since its a new med for you. He looked at me, got this real strange expression on his face, and then dropped over. (literally). Took all of about 5 minutes. Thankfully, I was able to take care of the issue, but, needless to say - he never takes prednisone anymore.

Also - I am allergic to beestings (only certain types of bees) - and hubby is not. I carry around a couple of epipens for my safety. This past winter, while spending our time in the southwest, Roy got stung and had the very first reaction he has ever had. Thank goodness that I am allergic, because we were nowhere near a doctor, and my epi did the trick.

The human body is strange, to be sure - it can change on a dime and give you five cents change.

Thank you both (actually, the 8 of you). I have actually thought about (and saw) the poker challenge (no health care hernia surgery ((did you catch that joke?))). But, I think, if i can go in and find it's just a fatty hernia, versus an organ hernia, the Doc says that it would be o.k. to just live with it. So, again, I'll have to set up an untrasound to determine if it's organs or not. If it is a fatty hernia, then she says it will just turn into a lump that will always be there.. But if it's an organ (intestine), then we'll need to go in there and fix it. The 'average' costs of an umbilical hernia is 5.5K. But, with payment in full, I can get a 25percent discount. That's 4.125K. That's 'do-able', if I can move it onto a credit card and pay it off over the course of many years.

Just another caveat - just in case they don't need to do anything to your little lump. If you have to lift something heavy, wear a belt. In fact, even if you do get it fixed - it never hurts to wear safety equipment. (even if you don't have any kind of injury - hernia or otherwise). I'm not sure how old you are, but, just from personal opinion, if I'd have known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.
