Today I was able to hit a strange field for awhile. I passed it with no intention of hunting. A mile later, I pulled a U. This field had more odd stones than any other I had seen. Stuff that just isn't normal. I actually found obsidian!!

It's unworked, but must trace back to native trade. Also a couple broken points.

When I get home, I'll split the piece. It'll be translucent then. In a couple hours we will have a verdict! Hippy, I'm on the VA. Line. Obsidian is not abundant in VA. but not impossible to find either. I think this piece has made a 20 mile travel at some point in time. It's small for a blank and has no sign of reduction as a core should. The piece matches the obsidian sample in my geology kit. My kit was given to me by the principal of our local high school. It isn't a kit put together by a nitwit such as myself. It's a professional geology sample kit. By the way, I never consider what we do as "arguing" I'm just an old country hippy myself. Hippies don't argue, we just try to better mankind. I thank you for any input on any post I may have. For this one, you said it, my mind is made up. It's made up on pretty reasonable research and comparison.

Here is some more for comparison ..SOHIO picked these up. Also one other piece I kept because of the color.

It's too thick. It is a block, and has no taper or thin part. Instead if translucency, it has more of the reflective properties of obsidian. I'm sure light would pass through it, if I knocked it in half diagonally. I may do that, since it has no artifact value, that I can tell.

i have a big chunk of obsidian dont matter how thick it is a light will shine through it

Slag can be very translucent
Here is one that was knapped.

i guess i could be wrong lol

True, true- obsidian is found in VA. Found a chunk last fall while out w/ a minerologist from the west coast. It was opeque grey w/ darker grey stripes. Just a chunk, but sharp like crazy at every edge. I gave it to my pal, so it's not within photo range... sorry for that- I know a lot depends on good pics around here. But that's my story, and I'm sticking to it ;) Nice piece you found there. Looking forward to seeing what it looks like once you crack it a bit!

My piece doesn't have the characteristic of high quality obsidian. But, according to the link provided above, their is nothing to rule obsidian out. It is reflective black glass that has no patina. Dirt wipes off with a gentle swipe. It's rather light with a strange over all feel, for those of us that aren't used to finding it everyday. I guess the presence of little water makes it light feeling.

I won't say if I think it is or isn't obsidian. But I will say it doesn't look like any obsidian I've ever seen before.

Lol! Thanks for viewing it. I think it is poor quality.

I don't usually pick them up so I don't have unworked pieces except for this little one that made it's way into my pocket since I was rolling it around in my fingers while walking one day.

Thats funny cause when I am hunting I will pick up a rock and carry it in my hand till I find a worthy artifact thats a keeper.

Yeah.. just one of those things.
I always put my left boot on first ..IDK.. LOL.

As soon as I jump out of my truck, i pick up a rock. I started this years ago, so that land owners would see I wasn't lying to them about hunting arrowheads. I'm not as quick to walk into a stranger's field, as I once was. Was a time that I got permission to hunt by simply hunting.

You should stop wearing boots and go strictly with those Gator shoes. Just to trademark your name.

NC what you have there is a piece of Anthracite aka, coal. From what I see of the pictures that is my take on it.

Contact a flint knapper in your area. They will let you know if its obsidian or not. It could be a lower grade obsidian. I have found obsidian points on the New Mexico desert which is hundreds of miles from obsidian deposits.

I busted a small piece off this morning😁 it's low grade obsidian I'm pretty sure, still.
