Best find was this 1858 Half Dime...I believe they were deliberate cuts.

cut or not, that half dime is freakin awesome!!!
on my bucket list!

congrats!

They were deliberate. People would do this to create their own little stash of free silver

They were "cutting corners" back then too! :laughing7: Still a nice find!

A Half Dime weighs 1.4g,this one weighs 1.1,so...it would take 93 Half Dimes to get 28g,that's a lot of work.:tongue3:

Great score on the silver! bale seals a fav too

Very cool 3/8 dime lol. Bummer that heel plate is broken. Those star plates do t show up often

I've never really seen this before. I know gold coins were shaved down, but like WT said it's a heck of a lot of work with silver for small reward and I doubt that coin was accepted by anyone after it was clipped. Seems to me it was deliberate defacing of the coin out of boredom.

Nice find. Any half dime is a great half dime. However, if they were trying to clip the edges, they were a little too obvious.

Chris, very nice treasure trove of goodies, congratulations. I have seen 1800's firearms with the front sights replaced with a cut and fitted silver coin, maybe that was the intended purpose of this one???? Happy hunting, Sub 8-)

I reckon you make due with what you have.:laughing7:

Tom,

The Farm next door is from that era also,Ritchie has plowed the fields there too for the first time in over 6 decades, you know where I'll be.:laughing7: A whole new trove of treasure!

I found my first 1800s silver and only my second Barber last weekend... so that little half dime looks really sweet to me. Pre CW US silver... the stuff that dreams are made of.

Smittyman and I are going to Philly for four days of hunting, in a week. We have high hopes of perhaps finding a seated coin!

The fresh plowed field sounds like it might be a honey hole for YOU! GL!

That's why they put the lines on the rim, if one was missing it wasn't worth it's value so know one clipped them after that

Interesting. Which lines exactly are you talking about?
