Those were used for horses who pulled a wagon or sled in the winter for more traction even riding horses, just think about it you wouldn't want your horse to fall down while traveling. Back in those days we took great care of our horses as we traveled great many miles. Charley2hats

its for horses that usually pull heavy loads. It is for traction and gripping ability
