Old Cane......and it's stuck in our attic...update!

We found this old cane in our attic eves while looking for Christmas lights last week . There are 5 roofing nails holding it hard against the beam - won't budge . It's too close quarters to fit a hack saw .
Any suggestions on how to remove it without damaging it any more than it all ready is ?

the handle looks like it might be ivory .

Re: Old Cane......and it's stuck in our attic...update!

Judging by the pics, it looks like bone, but since I can't see it in person, here are a few test to determine if it is bone or ivory: Look at it with a magnifying glass, bone will have tiny pores, and generally these pores are dark from years of dirt. Ivory will have Schreger lines, which are crossed hatched or either circular rings. Another test is the 'cheek test.' Put the knob on your cheek, if it feels colder than room temperature, it probably is ivory. The hot pin test can be used to detect if it is synthetic ivory. Heat a pin to red hot, and if the pin sinks into the cane top, it is not ivory. A hot pin will penetrate bone too, and give off a 'dentist drill' smell. Ivory is extremely hard, and it takes a great deal of pressure just to scratch the surface. Great find  Breezie
