Old cart path gives up the Mexican Silver Carolus III 1782 1 Reales

radarwill · Mar 30, 2008

Went this afternoon to my favorite abandoned cart path. Found this coin down about 2".
I'm also finding old and crusty white round lead balls. I'm on to an old Spanish Mexican encampment I hope. Is this coin rare? It's my best find to date! I'm hooked for sure for another season.

Thanks.

Probably not. These were the coins of the realm for many years. Nice find!

Awesome find. Rare....yes, relatively speaking. What I learned after finding a 1/2 reale this year is that spanish silver was very common and in fact more common than any other type of currency (at the time). Yours is in great shape. Congratulations on an excellent find.

Very nice find, and one you'll see here frequently. They were used heavily, and legally, until the 1850's (or so I've read). The United States govt. didn't mint until the 1790's, so we used an assortment of Colonial and foreign coins in trade. Yours is in way better shape than mine!

GREAT COLONIAL SILVER PAL. I HAVE A 1 REALE AND A 1/2 REALE. YOURS IS IN BETTER CONDITION THAN BOTH OF MINE.............WHAT A FEELING, HUH..........PACO

Sweet find. Good work.
Yes, our current coinage system is pattern off of the reale.

The saying two bits, 25 cent, four bits, 50 cents, six bits, 75 cents, a dollar= 8 bits. 8 reale cut up.
I believe it was until the mid-1800's that they were still in wide use.

Good luck on that spot.

Congrats on your first Reale! It's always a great thrill to find one! WTG! As several T-Neters have pointed out, Reales were legal currency until Congress outlawed all foreign currency as legal tender in 1857.

That's a beautiful coin! Congratulations on digging that baby up. And I'd like to see the "crusty round white lead balls." They could very well be old muzzle loading ammo. Please post a photo of those when/if you can. Thanks, and again...NICE FIND!!!

I'm finding many balls like this one. Some are mangled but many are intact like this one.
The dime is for scale.
Any ideas?
Thanks
