Old Gold Locket Piece & 1810 Crotal Bell

What was great about today was finally talking my friend Jeff R to get out and do some digging ......so we decided to make our way down to Allegheny county and hunt a few areas we had detected in the past ...so after filling up the truck with gas and picking up a few snacks for back in the woods we made our way to our first cellar hole and very quickly Jeff pulls out a nice Silver thimble and a nice one at that , Plus it's the first one he has ever found , and will be a nice addition to his collection. As we continued we found a number of iron items ( ax heads , lead pieces and a few of those large iron rings which hit very well ) so now that this site was not up to our expectations we made our way to the next site .

When we got to the next site Jeff and I had a quick snack before we started detecting and with having only 4 to 5 hours to detect we stayed in this area the remainder of the day , so as we started again I came around to the back of the cellar hole and got a nice hit so started digging and digging it was , through roots and rocks . This area was not the best place to dig but finally after a foot down came across a nice Crotal bell or sleigh bell. This bell is one of the best I have found and in excellent condition .

Doing a little research the Bell made by William Barton ,East Hampton,Connecticut USA. William was born 1762, died 1849 . He made the first one-piece cast crotal bell about 1809 . (1) Bell has eight petals total. The petals do not touch each other. The Bell is marked with"B" and "W" reading from top to bottom. 1 3/8 inch diameter. Two Holes in base. U-shaped shank. Ca. 1810- 1830...

So continuing on and moving around the area I did not get another hit for at least an hour . We moved about a 40 yards behind to cellar hole and found the barn with the rock walls still standing after all these years .....so we kept swinging that coil and now finally after a hour and a half got a nice hit and out came the gold locket , its a little different but not something I have! Jeff finally yells coin and pulls out the first coin of the day a very worn wheat cent what a bummer....but hey you can't expect those old coins all the time!!! Now with it near 2:00 it was time to head home and with the ride over a hour to get home we packed it in and after all was done a nice Bell, locket and a few other relics were found , it was a good day out! Keep on digging and HH !

It looks like you had a pretty decent hunt today. The bell and locket are both excellent digs.It looks like there may have been a cameo or jewel of some sort attached to the front of the locket.I'm glad you guys had a good road trip.Sounds like fun. HH!

Nice finds! I found a very similiar sized petal bell. Mine is marked VS, which stands for Vine Starr, also of East Hampton, Conn. I guess in your research, you know that East Hampton, Conn. was the bell capital of the country.

The bell is really nice, but that locket is very pretty. What do you suppose went on the front of it? Does it open? You guys sound like you had a great day and finding walls on that barn standing was neat.
What a wonderful way to spend the day....good weather, good friends and good finds! :)

Probably a fraternal emblem of some sort. Compare to this Masonic watch charm/fob. Some have enameled fields; others, onyx, agate, or some other semiprecious stone.

Nice finds, Seeker!

Sure beats my $2.21 in clad and 150 beer bottle caps and pull tabs. I will take Quality over quantity any day..... Nice finds. Question for you Seeker.... By cellar hole are you saying there use to be a house there at one time and it has been torn down or burned down and all that is left is a depression in the ground that use to be a cellar or basement? Thanks, Ralph

Nice Bell. I can't imagine going an hour without a hit. You must be a patient person. I would be out of there in maybe 30 minutes if I were not getting anything. Guess that comes with experience.

It sure looks like a cameo or stone or other decorative piece came off the face of that locket. I think I would go back to the hole I pulled that out of and carefully dig some more and put it thru a wire screen to try to find the rest of it. It just may not be metal but sitting in the same hole. the owner certainly wouldn't have thrown out a gold locket just because the front piece came off, but mother nature and time might well have taken it off........ Show us the whole piece when you find it and put it back together. HH
