Old Gold Locket Piece & 1810 Crotal Bell
What was great about today was finally talking my friend Jeff R to get out and do some digging ......so we decided to make our way down to Allegheny county and hunt a few areas we had detected in the past ...so after filling up the truck with gas and picking up a few snacks for back in the woods we made our way to our first cellar hole and very quickly Jeff pulls out a nice Silver thimble and a nice one at that , Plus it's the first one he has ever found , and will be a nice addition to his collection. As we continued we found a number of iron items ( ax heads , lead pieces and a few of those large iron rings which hit very well ) so now that this site was not up to our expectations we made our way to the next site .
When we got to the next site Jeff and I had a quick snack before we started detecting and with having only 4 to 5 hours to detect we stayed in this area the remainder of the day , so as we started again I came around to the back of the cellar hole and got a nice hit so started digging and digging it was , through roots and rocks . This area was not the best place to dig but finally after a foot down came across a nice Crotal bell or sleigh bell. This bell is one of the best I have found and in excellent condition .
Doing a little research the Bell made by William Barton ,East Hampton,Connecticut USA. William was born 1762, died 1849 . He made the first one-piece cast crotal bell about 1809 . (1) Bell has eight petals total. The petals do not touch each other. The Bell is marked with"B" and "W" reading from top to bottom. 1 3/8 inch diameter. Two Holes in base. U-shaped shank. Ca. 1810- 1830...
So continuing on and moving around the area I did not get another hit for at least an hour . We moved about a 40 yards behind to cellar hole and found the barn with the rock walls still standing after all these years .....so we kept swinging that coil and now finally after a hour and a half got a nice hit and out came the gold locket , its a little different but not something I have! Jeff finally yells coin and pulls out the first coin of the day a very worn wheat cent what a bummer....but hey you can't expect those old coins all the time!!! Now with it near 2:00 it was time to head home and with the ride over a hour to get home we packed it in and after all was done a nice Bell, locket and a few other relics were found , it was a good day out! Keep on digging and HH !
