Old Gold Mine

Went to an old gold mine location today. Found a pit they had been digging as they followed 2 quartz veins along with other diggins, a piece of quartz with a little gold showing (top-center) and also found the location of a arrastra pit they had been using. It's the concrete slab with bolts in it titled "mine4". If you don't know what an "arrastra" is, google it; pretty interesting stuff. Just wonder how much mercury they dumped here using that pit, it's right next to a creek.

Nice pics, the idea of mercury being dumped is uncomfortable to say the least. On the bright side, there isn't much snow, it could be a place to tinker with. Will you be going back?

yes, I'm going back to check out the arrastra a littke better, metal detect and do a little panning and maybe take a sluice. Where a smaller creek feeds into the larger one there is a pretty good size pool that looks like it could catch some gold. I need the water to go down a little first.
No Fossis, never did any hard rock mining but I like the history of it. My wife's Great Grandfather, ol' Rufus Simpson took part in the Alaska gold rush. He sent letters home written kinda like a diary. They got printed in Alaska Magazine some years back. They were a whole different breed weren't they?
