Found in a spot where I have unearthed a lot of trade items & War of 1812 relics. One side was luckily preserved from the elements. 20190920_080806.jpg20190920_080820.jpg20190919_161557.jpg20190919_161605.jpgI am not a hatchet expert but also not finding anything on the internet about an axe maker in Norwich. It is stamped 'No 1' NORWICHCONN. CAST STEEL. WARRANTED.

That's a nice relic If you search axe heads on the tnet search bar I've seen axe identification posted by year and shape hope that helps. Tommy

I found some auction records of pistols with the same stamp...might help to date your nifty little hatchet.

Bacon & Company Single Shot Bar Hammer Pistol, c. 1852-58, serial number 90, walnut grips, marked on the octagonal part of the barrel "BACON &CO./NORWICH C T./CAST STEEL", barrel lg. 6, overall lg.

also

Bacon & Co. Pepperbox Pistol, c. mid-19th century, walnut grips with engraved steel frame, barrel marked BACON & CO. NORWICH C-T., and CAST STEEL, lg. 7 1/2 in.

and this one, earlier, stamped "Cast Steel"

Original 1835 Under Hammer Percussion Boot Pistol by Bacon & Co of Norwich CT

You might be able to research Bacon & Co. at your local library or historical society...during the Civil War they made Navy revolvers.

I was born and raised in Norwich, Conn. but have no idea who made that hatchet. Are there any other markings?

So on the very top there is a 'NO1' but upon closer inspection, light cleaning it actually says 'REYNOLDS & SONS'. Anything on that maker? I cannot find much.
