Very heavy iron spike found today in SW Florida where the Gulf of Mexico meets 10,000 islands. Thoughts? The inside is square (it is broken) so it appears to be hand made.

Not much detail. Why is it a spike? Kind of resembles a throttle lever or control lever.

Iron spikes were used in ship construction for fastening above the water line....but you gotta get it derusted to tell any further what it may have been from

I found it has no structures or settlements for miles
But attached to a floating piece of wood it could be from a place thousands of miles away.
a pirate ship sounds cool , but will we ever really know? I agree , smack it with a hammer . then if you like it do the electrolysis. it's a good item to learn on if nothing else . there are detailed instructions on this site .

That would be my preferred method.....or you can whack it with a hammer and that will knock off the big stuff. If it is forged, it won't hurt it.
Hammer was too much for it.. Live and learn I guess. Are there any more gentle ways to get the stuff off of it? Cocacola? I’m afraid it has been ruined now.

What I see there is mostly concretion, meaning there was not enough there to conserve. No harm done....if you hadn't done it, the elements would have finished it off as it now was exposed to oxygen.

Well it was a fun find anyway. Looking forward to the next one.
