I was out on a service call today and when I went to the door to give the lady her bill, I saw a handful of marbles in the flower bed by the front step. I commented on them when she came to the door. I told her I collect old marbles, and she said I could have them. On my way out, I grabbed them up, and scratched around and found a lot of them. She told me she had tons of them somewhere, and she didn't care anything about them. I told her if she could find them, I'd buy them. I hope she does...if these were the ones relegated to the flower beds, I wonder what the ones she kept inside look like!

There are 42 slag marbles, 33 regular old glass marbles, 3 handmade glass ones in rough shape, and 2 pottery ones. The brown one is a bennington, the white one next to it is just like a bennington, but I've never seen one in white. It has the eyes on it like a bennie does though. I was excited digging them up!

Hey, I think I lost those back in the 1950's. They look just like mine. Can I have them back now?

DaChief, Most of these are older than that, but since you lost your marbles, you might not have known that, lol ;).

I lost my marbles too...so I try to compensate for the abscence by collecting any that I find. For some reason, finding other people's lost marbles doesn't help my situation much.....or so my wife says.

Allen, me too, at 34.

Here is a pic of some of the ones I've gotten, mostly from walking old homesites metal-detecting. I put them in an old milk bottle until it's full enough to dump them and sort them and add them to my collection. I have thousands.

I love those old marbles!! 8)

Where are you Duffy!!?!!

Congrats! Nana :)

Nice bunch of marbles. Somebody sure had fun playing with those, look at all the flea bites.
JDD

Great deal. I used to play with marbles when I was like 7 or 8ish. I never knew that they could be valuable. It would be nice to have those back. Some do fetch a good price. Either way if it excites you, it must be worth the excitement. It would be great if the lady did find all those old ones. Good luck.

very nice finds love the bennington hope she finds the rest

Great grab Cheese,,, Congrats!
I hope she gets back with ya on the rest of 'em...
Good luck, & Happy hunting~

I think most of those are called "slates". I used to work with a guy that was a marble knut. He'd go bonkers over those clear ones with the colored ribbons inside.

I traded him one like that for a 1917 (type 1) Standing Liberty 25¢ in VF.

The white one is what they call a china marble. At one time it had paint on it. Sometimes a target other times leaves or flowers. Look real close and you may still see traces of paint. Made by the Germans at same time the swirls were made. 1800s

youdid real good...in the second pic you got some peltier marbles...the one in the center top the red black looks to be a rebel....in mint condition 50$++= the slags in good condition go for 3-5$ each i saw some akro corkscrews in there too...the 2&3 color ones are coveted....ck that rebel for stuff in the black that looks like glitter...thats aventurine and makes it better....use sunlight or a bright flashlight .....you did real good.....
bookpic.jpg

the white one with the pontil with the bennies is probabably a ballot box marble...ya heard the phrase blackballed.....this means a yes vote...in the last pic the white/black corkscrew at like 50clock....use a bright flashlight to ck for red oxblood under the black...if its there you got a blueblood...$$$$

Crapps, I should of never threw out that box of marbles that I found in my crall space, they must of bin there for over 40 yrs!

I feel darn stupid NOW

dont feel too bad hardy...i put mickey mantles rookie card in my spokes...i really did sound like a motor sycle..... to a six year old kid......

I got one of those dirty looking marbels the other day, Looked old, (right around 10" mark) dont know anything about the others, but always like digging them

Thanks for the IDs Duffy! The white marble has what looks like a pontil mark in the pic, but it is actually one of many. It's like a smoothed-down "eye" like the bennies have. You can see several on the other side of the marble, where it was fired along with and touching other marbles. I'll look to see if any of the dark corkscrews are bluebloods.

Since we're on the subject, I'll use this as an excuse to post some of my others. I especially like the original store display box from akro with the original string and re-order card. 100 mint corkscrews in the original box. I also like the sulphide.

The last marble is a whatsit. I don't know how to ID this one.

There are some beautiful marbles in this thread!
Yes, marbles have made quite a comeback and are picking up in popularity.

Thanks to my mom, my collection was given away when I went away to college.
