This morning, I found this lovely oil painting of a ship. Size: ~11"x17" (fyi: I removed the painting from the frame to photograph it.)
It is signed with initials, ARA or AGA or AEA? On the back of wood frame, it appears to have "Constitution" ? written in pencil on the frame which I assume is the ship.
Here are my questions.... Is my imagination or are there flying saucers / UFO overhead in the sky? Any guess as to the age?

Yes. You are crazy. Welcome to the world of "What is it?". But I digress...

You have an artist's impression of the often copied "Old Ironsides" - original by Ribcowsky circa 1910's.

I have no idea on the artist. I suspect this was a widely reproduced painting by those 'Boardwalk' artists you always see at the beach.

Ninth grade art project, circa 1973. I didn't see the ufo, so I went ahead and did a 4-Way of Orange Sunshine. I'll get back to you in about 90-minutes. :icon_thumright:

Looks like UFO's me.
The way the lighting is on the port side, corresponding to the light directly above the water,
making it seem like the objects are doing the lighting...! Painted to record an event.
If the painting was dated, then maybe in log of the ship might reveal the true reason this painting
was done this way....

It's the football shaped objects in the sky at the upper right that I don't understand. What and why...... :icon_scratch:

I remember that day. We were on route home and we'd run out of whiskey the week prior, so a few of the guys started drinking the lamp oil and that's when things got crazy.

USS Constitution...A.K.A. (Also Known AS)...Old Ironsides...A.K.A. Eagle of The Sea!

USS Constitution is a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy named by President George Washington after the United States Constitution.

On Aug. 19, 1812, the American frigate USS Constitution routed British forces in a War of 1812 battle in the North Atlantic Ocean, earning the nickname “Old Ironsides.”

Your painting appears to me as being quite old.
The backing and name printed "Constitution" all appear old.

The Artist may have titled his painting "A.K.A." as a Riddle...to what was her other "Nicknames"?

The USS Constitution was renamed "Constitution" in 1925, and today after being saved from being decommissioned is now the oldest commissioned ship in the world still afloat.

Your Painting may reflect the numerous similar Paintings commissioned in 1934, when she completed a three-year, 90-port tour of the nation.

To me, Your Painting depicts the USS Constitution's night escape from the 5 British Ship's assault on her.

"In 1812, The USS Constitution, alone...was followed by five ships of the British Halifax Squadron commanded by Commodore Philip Broke. The squadron was composed of one ship of the line and four frigates HMS Africa, HMS Shannon, HMS Belvidera, HMS Aeolus and HMS Guerriere, who were in close pursuit for two days. Old Ironsides Captain in a remarkable feat of navigation and audaciousness, evaded the British squadron by warping his ship ahead and using his long boats to tow the Constitution. The chase by the Halifax Squadron was long and arduous and established Hull's reputation for courage, daring and seamanship. "For sixty four hours the frigate had been insight of an overwhelming enemy and most of the time actively pursued by them" yet Hull prevailed."

Nicknamed ironsides because British cannoballs, from the ship Guerriere, were seen bouncing off of her sides. She was constructed of oak and built differently than other frigates. The ships ribs were closer together and heavy planking was used, making the ship esspecially sturdy.Read the book guys you'll be fascinated.
