Hi everyone,

Been busy the past 3 or four days straight hunting this old overlook. Alot of it is still grown in and there is a good ammount of garbage at the site.

I don't have before and after pics of everything. A few times I went out I only got a few wheats or so. It would have made for a ton of photos.

However, I did have a great day Saturday. It was slow for the first hr. I only had a indian and a wheat. Then all the sudden at the base of a fairly old tree I found a barber dime at six inches.

I checked the area fully around the tree. No other hits. There was a very small slope about 8 ft off the tree starting to go up a hill. A perfect spot for a seat.

I got a nice nickle hit and found a buffalo. I figured it was with the barber dime just lost a few feet away. I must have missed the other 6 coins by inches.

Because when I went to resweep the hole I was getting multiple signal just inches from were the buffalo came up. I let my son gently dig them out. Next we had 2 more v-nickles another buffalo a merc and the best coin the barber quarter.

Finally it was cleaned out. I checked all over. And at the very end a lone merc tried to escape me. It must have got on edge and rolled down the hill when the hole was opened. I found it though from past experiences.

After that I was very pleased with 10 old coins for a few hrs work. I decided to stay for a little longer because I was on a roll and the detector was sniffing them out. I found a nice lead soldier all shot up with a bb gun.

I was getting hot and hungry so we called it a day. I spent about a total of 8 hrs hunting the site last week. It needs to die down some before I can get to the other half.

When I got home and was able to start to clean the coins I realized the 1896 was a key date if it had a S mint mark. It was very dark and worn out. It also has a dent were his ear is on the front.

After cleaning it all the sudden I saw a very worn down S on the back. I checked with a loop and could see a S either upside down or right side up.

I can't say for sure if it is. I'm not a coin expert but my vision is really good. I asked my wife and a few others and they see a faded S also.

It doesn't really matter I guess because it is a very poor example of one if it is. I tried to get better pics to see if it would show but I didn't have much luck.

Maybe someone here may see something or know something. Here are the break down of finds.

2 Indians 1883 and 1887. 1 1896 barber quarter. 1 1914 D barber dime. 2 Mercs 1918 S and a 1924. 2 Buffalos 1 no date the other a 1925. 2 V-nickles 1 a 1903 and the other a 1911. 1 1951 rosie. 6 wheats and a 46 jefferson.

I hope you all like the pics and story. It has taken me a few hrs to get done.

Re: Old Overlook Produces Lost Pocket Of Coins. Possible 1896 S Rare Barber Quar

Hit the Jackpot. Wish we would have gotten out Saturday. Was a chore day. >:(

That is sweet to get multiple silver and other old coins in one hole. Nate and I have found a couple hundred silver coins and have yet to get two in one hole.

That is cool the Barber Quarter is a better date. ;D

Thanks alot everyone.

I've known about this site for awhile. I hunted it some last year and found like 10 silver quarters a bunch of wheats a few indians mercs...

I decided to go back and rework it with my 1400 coil. I didn't have one at the time. The area is really big to.

There may have been a little store or something there. They must have used quartes alot. Most where early washingtons and a few standing libs.

There are alot of downed tree's and logs and things. I'm sure there is more to find.

I live in pittsburgh pa. Alot of history around here. My real passion is to look for colonial artifacts. I've been doing alot of research lately.

I hope to come up with something good this fall or winter.

Thanks again everyone,

HH Jer

Really nice Jer! Ya never know what people are gonna throw over the side. Congrats and best wishes on you're continued success. I'm sure those colonial finds won't hide from you for very long. HH and keep 'em comin'.

Dang Jeremy! :o I wanna go huntin with YOU! :D

Awesome as usual. ;) Thanks for the post.

Nana :)

I don't think there's a mintmark on the quarter, but who cares? Looks like some fantastic hunting!

That lead soldier is great- I have found one or two, but never with an intact paintjob like that.

Some, if not all, the Barber quarter mintmarks are a little off-center, to the right, as I recall. All three that I've found were mintmarked: 1894-O, 1902-O, and 1916-D. It was more than ten years ago that I found my last one.

Thanks for the replies.

Nana, I'd take you out on a hunt anytime. If you ever come to pa let me know. I'll take you out on a adventure.

Lm, I tried to stress in the post that the area where a mint mark would be is extremely worn down. The only way to see something on the coin in that area is with a jewlers loop.

I have no reasons to hype up a find. I have already found 6 or 7 barber quarters just this year. I know how to look for a mint mark.

This is off to the right also. It's not like I can mail the coin around to treasure net users for verification.

I wasn't gonna say anything because nothing can be seen. Weather it's a half of O or a very weak S something used to be there.

Not a big deal I just don't want people thinking I'm lieying or anything. It's there it's just not showing up. A coin dealer would know but I never have the time to go to a shop.

Stunning finds as always Jer....your research seems to pay off well.

If you ever want to show a rookie a few spots, lemme know. Pittsburg isn't THAT far of a drive that it wouldn't be worth it.

Dan

great finds Jer! The coins cleaned up nicely. Did you just wash them off or something special to them?

Great finds Jer, congrats on all that silver and old! I found a lead soldier similar to yours, maybe the same series, found it in the states last year. HH, Mike

Nice coins Jer. A good friend of mine found a $1 dollar gold coin at the base of a old tree like that! Tsgman

Thanks guys,

Danimal let me know some time. I'll take you out on a hunt over the weekend or something.

Be prepared though for some rough hunting. I hunt all woods and hills and slopes.

You sound like you can handle it though. I'm always here and hunt every weekend just about. Let me know when you got some free time.

Funkman, I spent a good few hrs cleaning the coins. It always takes me a good bit of time to get them where I want them.

They were cleaned in a peroxide bath. Then coated and buffed out with mothers.

Mike, as much as I love old coins I lean towards the relics more. I loved finding that soldier. I've found more than one before. I just think there really neat and crafted well.

And to actually see he was all shot up by a bb gun. I got the fealing like I was back in the 40's shooting at him for a moment myself when I found him.

If that makes any sence. He retained alot of his paint. They actually shot him right in the crouch ouch poor guy. He would have been a fun target to shoot though. Put him on a stump.

Ts, I hope that a gold coin comes my way at some point. That would be the pinnacle for me. I've been looking hard and hoping one day it will come to me.

I know I gotta be in the right era for one. I've herd stories of them being found in parks and things. By hunters who were no were near as skilled or as dedicated as I am.

I beleive it will come for me at some point. I think the detecting gods are gonna make me wait awhile. But I'll take erything else it's willing to give me in the mean time.

HH Guys,

Jeremy

Jeremy,
I am free next weekend (29th-1st). I have my son every-other weekend, and though this weekend is mine with him, and he does seem to enjoy detecting, he loses his mind if coins aren't fast in coming.
BTW, you're correct in that hunting rough wooded areas is fine with me. When I am not detecting, I am thrashing my mountainbike through the woods!
email me at
pokenaut@aol.com and we'll hook up!

Dan

That sounds good Danimal.

I go out every weekend. Just let me know later in the week what's up and I'll see what direction your coming from so we can meet up.

I can't promise large old silver coins. But I'm sure will find something.

Some hunts you get 10 old coins and others you only get a few wheats. It would still be a good time and maybe I can show you a few tips.

Nice finds Jer, great pics as always. One of these days maybe we can hunt together. :)

wtg! great haul there jer! Love that old lead toy soldier!

Thanks guys,

RI, I'm sure we'll get together at some point. I always have some locations to hunt.

I just would hate to invite some one and them not end up with a good bit of treasure. I can't say how someone else hunts compared to I do.

I take some people to spots that I feal are decent. And while I'm finding old coins they are not. It comes down to good equiptment and experience at certain sites.

Yesterday I went out to try and track down a old cellar hole. Everything matched up 100% on the research end. I drove to the site but couldn't get up into the woods with my younge son.

I didn't even try. I left the unit at home and went and scouted the area. It was all still wooded like I hoped and I'm sure it's back there.

Nothing is guaranteed until your actually back there and find the ruins. I'm pretty sure though I've locted another cellar hole. My maps of 1876 show it was there.

I also checked a aerial view and can see traces of something in the woods exactly where the map says the home was. Saturday I'll get over there and see if I can find it.

Hopefully I'll get some large cents and some more early finds. I'll keep you all posted.

Other than that I'm still finding other old coins in the meantime.

HH Jer
